Nurse advocacy is the act of pleading for or actively supporting a course or proposal.

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) participated in urging the congress to pass a bill that would protect children and teens from the high increase in the use of tobacco and the resultant health issues associated. Tobacco use is responsible for 480,000 deaths annually with an additional 41,000 deaths from secondhand smoke.

The bill deals with these three main issues;

  • Restriction of online sale of tobacco and tobacco products which is an easier access to young people.
  • Curtail use of tobacco flavored products including menthol cigarettes which musk the smell of tobacco and may encourage youths/teens to begin tobacco usage.
  • Prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21; when people begin tobacco use at earlier age, they are highly likely to become addicted.

In order to continue advocating for this issue, school nurse ought to continue health promotion through continually giving health education in schools regarding the harm of tobacco, tobacco products and secondhand smoke.
