Management of Supply Chains and Operations Guidelines – Term Project Paper on Managing Operations in Supply Chains The term project paper is meant to provide students an opportunity to customize your learning experience through in-depth study of a topic of your choice related to operations management principles across supply chains. The best way to learn something is to do it. Each student will identify an area of improvement (for an existing process or product) or innovative idea (process or products) applicable to your workplace. Based on an idea developed (and approved by the instructor by June 03, 2020), each student will conduct in-depth study of the selected topic. Each student will write the term project paper that involves submission of a written report of her / his findings. Students are expected to achieve the following learning goals: • • • Understand relevant operations management / supply chain terms, concepts, and theories. Be able to critically evaluate and apply supply chain and/or operations management philosophies and theories in the design and improvement of business systems to achieve strategic goal. Develop an understanding of potential performance impact of supply chain management and operations activities on regular operations in today’s organizations. Deliverables: (1) One-page term paper proposal (2) Term Project Paper Full points for the term project paper are 40 points (out of total 200 points) for the class. The breakup for the term paper will be: Term Paper Proposal – 10 points, and Team Project Paper Report – 30 points. Deliverables (in details) (1) Term Project Paper Proposal Develop an idea for your term project paper. Your idea could be an area of improvement (for an existing process or product) or innovative idea (process or products) applicable to your workplace. Professor will guide each student and provide feedback (by 3rd June 2020) to finalize the idea that will be studied further for the term project paper. The idea should be supported with references and any other information you deem as appropriate. (2) Term Project Paper Conduct in-depth study and analysis on your proposed idea (that is approved by Professor on June 03, 2020) as much as possible. You can gather information from your workplace, from practitioner and academic articles and any other sources you deem appropriate. Make sure that you can connect your findings with the materials covered in the class. The final term project paper will be a well-developed report that summarizes your overall effort. At the minimum, the term project paper should contain: • • • • • Cover page with project title, student name, table of contents Background information about the project topic (motivation, implications on business etc.) Student findings on the project topic (everything that a student found about the project topic (write down the findings in an organized way) How your findings relate to the concepts discussed in this class. It is not necessary that you explain the concepts in detail, only make sure you relate your work with the class materials. References list (e.g., books, articles, websites) and Appendices (e.g., data tables, figures) The paper should be typewritten and should be a minimum of 10 pages and maximum of 15 double-spaced pages in length (12-point Times New Roman font; one-inch margins), not counting references, tables and the cover page. It should be written in the form of research paper (e.g. you need to cite where your material comes from in the body of the paper). (Read Hints and Tips on the Written Report for a better idea of instructor expectations). Hints and Tips on the Written Report Pay attention so that following expectations are met in your term project paper. • Identification of challenges for the topic of the term paper (why you think the topic is important). • Operations management concepts / theories / practices learnt / discussed in class. • Your recommendations / suggestions / predictions. • Quality of organization and structure of paper; clarity in expressing thoughts and concepts, good flow, good introduction and conclusion. • Quality, currency, and variety of sources cited – do not rely on only a few sources or only on the course materials for your research. Proper setup of the bibliography and in body citation is critical. • Proper grammar and spelling, appropriate length, follow instructions. Report Grading Criteria Papers will be graded on how well the assignment guidelines were followed, quality and quantity of information presented; shown ability to critically assess / elaborate on your area of study (rather than simply repeating something that has already been said before). The purpose of the report is to apply what you have learned in the class to your chosen term paper topic. Point wise, grading criteria is: motivation / introduction / description of the research subject (eight points); research conducted / work accomplished / literature review (eight points); recommendation / suggestions / implementation plan / results (eight points); and quality of report / followed guidelines / comprehension / teamwork (six points). Sources Used in Written Report Because the term paper needs to be written as a research paper, you must support your statements and recommendations with appropriate facts, and statistics. Your paper is expected to include relevant, current and credible business-related publications including quality-related operations / production management journals and magazines. Following is a list of what’s acceptable/not acceptable. • Refereed journals (i.e., peer reviewed; e.g., Harvard Business Review, Quality Progress, Journal of Operations Management, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review ….., etc.) and/or respected lay journals (e.g., Fortune, Business Week, Wall Street Journal) are good. These articles can be obtained either at the library (hard copies) or through electronic databases. • Stay away from the use of textbooks -- they are not primary sources (i.e., information included in texts is from other primary sources). While books are fine, remember, the time it takes to get to publication suggests the information may not be as current as the year suggests. • Web sources are acceptable, but they should be used selectively. Additionally, not all websites are equally good. However, websites with no validity may be those any of us could write and place on the web. Additionally, corporate websites should be used intelligently. Over-reliance on one source is discouraged. NOTE: Be sure you have read the above material carefully before asking questions. If you are uncertain how to cite sources properly, ask the instructor before turning in the term project paper final report.
