Description
PART A: CASE STUDY
Urbanization has been one of the dominant contemporary processes as a growing share of the global population lives in cities. Considering this trend, urban transportation issues are of foremost importance to support the passengers and freight mobility requirements of large urban agglomerations. Transportation in urban areas is highly complex because of the modes involved, the multitude of origins and destinations, and the amount and variety of traffic. Traditionally, the focus of urban transportation has been on passengers as cities were viewed as locations of utmost human interactions with intricate traffic patterns linked to commuting, commercial transactions and leisure/cultural activities. However, cities are also locations of production, consumption and distribution, activities linked to movements of freight. Conceptually, the urban transport system is intricately linked with urban form and spatial structure. Urban transit is an important dimension of mobility, notably in high density areas. The most important transport challenges are often related to urban areas and take place when transport systems, for a variety of reasons, cannot satisfy the numerous requirements of urban mobility. Some problems are ancient, like congestion (which plagued cities such as Rome), while others are new like urban freight distribution or environmental impacts such as,
- Traffic congestion and parking difficulties
- Public transport inadequacy
- Loss of public space
- High infrastructure maintenance costs
- Environmental impacts and energy consumption
- Accidents and safety
- Freight distribution

Part A
Give reasons why some countries develop the transportation process.
There are several reasons why some countries develop the transportation process. The
development of transportation systems has been taking place from the beginning of the industrial
revolution and has been associated with the growth of economic prospects. Many countries have
a common expectation that their transportation processes will produce economic revenues that
can validate the new capital obligations. The transportation process makes approximately 6 to
22% of the yearly return on every investment (Weisbrod & Fitzroy, 2011). The efficient
transport system provides time, cost, and reliability advantages that enable good to be
transported over long distances. This provides countries with opportunities for mass production
since broader markets can be accessed. The active transportation process also increases
competition. When transport is efficient, not only does competition increase, but also the
potential market of products increases. Countries develop transportation process since it
contributes to economic development through economic activities and the creation of jobs.
Select two (2) of the problems above and explain how these problems will affect the
movement of people and shipment in the supply chain in Oman?
Traffic Congestion and Parking Difficulties
With the growth of traffic congestion and volume on the urban roads and highways of
Oman, delivery, and freight service operatives are progressively being challenged to uphold
reliable and dependable agendas (Belwal & Belwal, 2010). This majorly impacts truckdependent and supply chain businesses, of which both have increasing importance for private

and public sector operators. Over the past few decades, Oman has been having a significant
increase in car ownership, especially in major cities. This has led to an increase in congestion
and parking spaces, which has also affected the movement of people and shipment from place to
place.
Loss of Public Space
Most roads in Oman are either free of access or publicly owned. Increased traffic has
significant consequences on public...
