Middle Sexes: Redefining He and She is a 2005 documentary that explores and discusses
the issue of sex, gender, and the treatment of people of different sexualities and gender across
cultures. The documentary presents people who have challenged the sexual dichotomy or the
gender binary and these people include two trans-women Calpernia and Andrea, Max who is an
intersex person, and the eight-year-old Noah. These are people who have challenged the typical
sexual dichotomy or gender binary. Noah challenges the gender binary in that despite living as a
boy and being biologically male, he prefers things which are categorized as typically for girls
like dressing and toys. Max was born with ambiguous genitalia and went numerous corrective
operations. Despite being raised as a girl, he challenged the gender categories of male and female
and now identifies himself as an intersex person. Calpernia and Andrea challenge the gender
