Description

Essay:

Word limit: between 1,000 and 1,500 words maximum, NOT including citations.

Choose ONE of these 4 options

Option 1: Compare/contrast experimental approach and qualitative approach

Option 2: Compare/contrast experimental approach and interpretive (ethnographic) approach

Option 3: Compare/contrast quantitative approach and qualitative approach

Option 4: Compare/contrast quantitative approach and interpretive (ethnographic) approach

For the two research approaches identified in the Option you selected, address BOTH of the following issues:

1.For each of these two research approaches, identify the types of research questions and types of explanation that it does particularly well and those it does not particularly well. Explain WHAT makes one approach better for particular types of research questions and explanations and the other one better for other types of research questions and explanations. Illustrate your argument with EXAMPLES and citations.

oFor example, you might note that one research approach does well at explaining patterns of correlation across people while the other does less well at that but does quite well at identifying the processes of causation that led to certain effects in specific cases.

2.Identify at least one research task that is required for BOTH research approaches. Then, ALSO identify at least one research task that is required by one of your research approaches but not the other. Explain how these research tasks help in building convincing answers to research questions. Illustrate your argument with EXAMPLES and citations.

oFor example, determine whether these research tasks are needed for both or only one of your research approaches: a) selecting cases that are similar in important ways, b) collecting similar data on a large number of cases, c) collecting detailed information about how things happened in a particular case, d) building a relationship with the people involved so they will report the truth, or e) reviewing prior literature on the research question.

This criterion is linked to a Learning OutcomeCompare/Contrast Research QuestionsCompares/contrasts types of research questions and explanations to which each research approach is well/poorly suited. That is, the paper identifies research questions/explanations to which each approach approach is and is not suited. *Must do BOTH with examples from actual research*

QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE APPROACH

Research is an organized and systematic method that sets to find answers to questions (Gall et al.,
1996). It helps people acquire new skills, knowledge of why or how things happen, and also innovations
of new services and products (ETU, n.d). According to Trochim and Donnely (2001), quantitative and
qualitative research form major research approaches. This essay embarks on comparing and contrasting the
quantitative and qualitative approaches in research.
The quantitative approach in research refers to the systematic way of investigating a phenomenon
simply by collecting quantifiable data and performing statistical or using computing techniques. In this
case, numbers are mostly used to show results achieved (Bhati, 2019). The quantitative approach sets to
determine the relationship between an independent level and dependent outcome of a given group or
population. In this approach, a hypothesis is determined and the subject of interest narrowed down to a
conclusion.
When thinking of a quantitative approach, a cause-effect correlation exists (Barrowman, 2016).
Examples are whereby excessive alcohol consumption is related to Liver Cirrhosis. This links excessive
alcohol consumption to liver disease. Again, prolonged mining is associated with an earthquake. For a
qualitative approach, an example is the use of hand sanitizers in the fight against COVID-19. Research
may embark to determine how the use of hand sanitizers causes one to stay free of the COVID-19. The
experimental research uses scientific methods to establish a cause-effect relationship in a group of variables
making up a study (Rudgers University, 2019).
According to Bhati (2019), a Qualitative approach on the other handsets to investigate and acquire
data from experiences through the use of conversational communication or open-ended questionnaires. In
this approach, the researcher is mainly interested in what people think and why they think that way. In this

approach, an observation is made, a pattern developed then a hypothesis is set to support a theory. The
conclusion is then made based on ideas.
Qualitative research is subdivided into three, Historical, ethnographic, and Narrative. Ac...
