Implications of being accused of plagiarism in the professional world
The course resources discuss journalism ethics and an instance in which some of these
ethics were violated. In this case, the video and the article by the New York Times describe the
malpractices that Blair, a former employee of the New York Times, engaged in during his four
years’ career (Barry, Barstow, Glater, Liptak, & Steinberg, 2003; Films on Demand, 2003).
While he was expected to seek the truth and report it, Blair often fabricated comments, deceived
his superiors and audience, misrepresented sources, and plagiarized the work of journalists from
other companies. Based on the misfortunes that befell the former journalist, the employer,
sources, and victims of plagiarism, it is possible to compile a list of implications of one being
accused of plagiarism in the professional world.
Plagiarism is a violation of the ethics of practice in journalism and other fields. Notably,
the Society of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ, 2014) code of ethics explicitly states that journalists
should “never plagiarize,” while they should always attribute their sources of information
regardless of whether the information is gathered from original sources or other publications. As
such, any form of plagiarism is a violation of one’s professional code of ethics, unethical, and
immoral. Since SPJ is a professional body that brings together all journalists, it is highly likely
that those who violate its policies will lose its favor and the support of other professionals.
Journalists who engage in plagiarism risk their careers. In this regard, many experts and
veteran journalists agree that plagiarism is malpractice that should never be tolerated in
journalism (Films on Demand, 2003). As such, companies can take harsh measures and punitive
actions against employees who engage in these malpractic...
