Chapter 10

1. What is the difference between causal and correlational studies?
The causal study is the research study conducted to identify the cause and effects
relationship among variables, whereas, Correlational study refers to a research study that is
conducted to determine the important factors that relate to the variables under consideration. In a
causal study, the researcher tests the cause and effect relationship that is whether or not a
variable causes changes to other variables. The research focuses on explaining one or more
factors that cause a problem. On the other hand, while in a correlational study the researcher can
state that there exists a relationship between two variables, identify a correlation does not mean
that one variable causes another variable to change. Another difference is that correlational
studies are invariably conducted in a non-contrived setting, while causal studies are conducted in
a contrived lab setting.
4. Explain the possible ways in which you can control nuisance variables.
The ways to control nuisance variables are:
Matching groups: one way to control the nuisance variable is to match the various group
by selecting the confounding features and purposely distributing them across the groups. For
example, if there are 10 men among the 40 members, each group will be assigned 2 men, so that
the effects of gender are spread across the five groups.
