Impact of the Environment on a Child’s Upbringing.
Abstract
Many researchers attempt to study the impact of the immediate environment of a child's
upbringing on the child's personality. This paper reviews several research materials that explore
the effect of the immediate environment on children and discusses the different factors identified
by the various authors in the different articles. The paper also analyzes a sociological perspective
(functionalism) and identifies socio-economic factors that influence the immediate environment
of a child, therefore, affecting the child’s personality. The paper concludes by summarizing the
main points of the entire study and recommends what families and parents can do to ensure that
they expose their children to positive environments for the sake of their future personalities and
characters.
Introduction
Several studies exist that assess the impact of the immediate environment in the
personality of a child. Different researchers approach this issue from a different perspective.
However, they all agree that the immediate environment plays a significant role in the child's
future character and personality. For example, Ferguson et al. (2013) argue that environmental,
physical, social factors like noise, crowding, and housing affects children's surroundings, which
determine their characters and personality in the future. Evans (2006) also agrees that the
physical environment affects the future nature and behavior of children and identifies factors like
parent-child interactions and self-regulation as some determinants of future personality. Further,
(Bornstein, 2013) focus on the impact of the various parenting styles on children and how they
affect their characters and behavior in the future. They focus on parenting differences that result

due to socio-economic factors that force parents to raise their children in different environments.
Davison & Lawson (2006) present their arguments based on how active youths are depending on
the environment they got exposed to during their childhood. It is a clear indication that two
authors agree that the immediate environment affects the child's personality. Functionalism is a
sociological perspective that relates to this topic in that children that are fortunate enough to
benefit from society end up giving back to the same community when they become adults. For
example, children brought up from a religious family gain values that are appropriate according
to society. These children are likely to become good people with likable personalities in the
future, which means they will positively impact the community, implying that both social and
children gain from each other. The immediate environment in a child's upbringing affects the
future personality and character of that child.
