Description

Submissions that are more comprehensive and detailed will earn a higher point total.  You need several paragraphs (around500 words).  You cannot just write two or three sentences and expect to receive full points.  Make sure that you cover all parts of the question.  I have added some current event articles you can read to help with your post.  You can emphasize your point by using information from one of the linked articles, the textbook, or add your own current event or other examples (including the experiences of you or someone you know). It helps to include data in your assignment (such as voter turnout rates, incarceration rates, etc.).  I want to see that you have read the material and understand the topic, so make sure you are specific in your answers.

Finally, make sure you do not just cut and paste information from an online source.

Describe the eligibility qualifications and registration process for voting in Texas. Identify and discuss those socio-economic factors that influence voter participation.  How does Texas rank in voter turnout compared to the turnout in the United States? How did Texas turnout rank in the election in November 2014 (you can find this online)?   Discuss three ways to increase voter turnout? Have these voting reforms worked in otherstates?

Question ONE
1. Describe the eligibility qualifications and registration process for voting in Texas.
To be eligible to vote in Texas, one must be 18 years old on Election Day, must be a citizen of the
Unites States, must reside on the county where one is registering and must not be a convicted felon.
Lastly, one must not have been declared mentally incompetent in a court of law.
The registration process in Texas requires one to fill an application form that can either be obtained
from the county voter registrar’s office, or other convenient locations like the library, post offices or
high schools. One can also download an informal application form from the States Office website.
An applicant can also register to vote as they apply for or are renewing their driver’s license. The
application must be received in the County Voter Registrar’s office 30 days before an election. A
successful applicant who meets the eligibility criteria is then issued with a voter registration
certificate.
All voters must provide a Texas driver’s license number or personal identification number or the last
four digits of social security number. The Voter ID law enacted in Texas in 2011 is described as one of
the toughest voter registration rules in the nation. It has been argued that the law discriminates
against African American, Hispanic and poor voters who are less likely to have the specified ID
documents.

2. Identify and discuss those socio-economic factors that influence voter participation.
Voter participation or turnout is defined as the percent of eligible voters who cast their votes in an
election. Voter participation is the means by which consent is given in a democracy and government
is made accountable to its citizens. Thu...
