The mental health status exam is an assessment of the individual's behavior and cognitive
aspects. The aspects considered include descriptions of appearance, consciousness, and attention
to detail, the activity of motor skills, and higher cognitive abilities (Martin, n.d.). The patient
being assessed is a 35-year-old male name, Kennedy. The patient is 69 inches in height and
weighs 200 pounds and has a history of alcohol and tobacco abuse.
Assessment of Appearance and Behavior
Kennedy presented to the exam with a disheveled and unkempt presentation. This was
characterized by uncombed hair, unbuttoned shirt, and a dirty pair of jeans. The patient has a
shaggy beard that seems to have been in its state for several months. There is a strong pungent
odor from the patient's mouth indicating poor dental hygiene. The patient had spotted white
shoes with stains. The patient also seems older than his stated age.
Kennedy stated that this was a happy day for him since he was called to an interview. The
patient's color coordination was inconsistent. The patient wore a mixture of assorted colors.
Looking at the motor skills, the patient has twitching. Additionally, the patient presents
