Description

The maintenance of homeostasis is of major importance to all organ systems in the body and the overall survival of the individual. Explain how homeostasis is the maintenance of a dynamic range of environmental qualities rather than holding the internal environment at a set point. What would be wrong with a set point (say for body temperature) rather than a working range of temperatures?

Explanation & Answer

Homeostasis is the tendency of an organism’s physiological system to maintain internal stability.  This internal stability is achieved not at a set point but rather when the organism is existing within a dynamic range of environmental qualities. In order for an organism to reach homeostasis, it requires the fluctuation and coordination of multiple systems.  It is this coordination and fluctuation of systems that allows homeostasis to be achieved within a range of environmental qualities and not just a specific point. The coordination of these multiple systems is just the internal factors that are required to achieve homeostasis, organisms also need to be able to react to the unpredictability o...
