Fall Out Shelter ( what i wrote)

Chosen People

  • The lawyer’s 24 year old wife who has just gotten out of a mental hospital
  • The 70 year old rabbi
  • 12 year old girl with a below average IQ
  • A male high school student who needs a wheelchair to get around
  • 19 year old college student who has just come out of the closet

A fallout shelter is somewhere people are kept safe from the risks of nuclear bombs and the following radioactivity. The lawyer’s 24 year old wife has just been discharged from a mental hospital; therefore, she should be subjected to safe conditions that assist towards a quick recovery. Sheltering her in the fallout shelter will assist in minimizing the risk she would be exposed to in a nuclear attack.

The 70 year old rabbi should also be sheltered in the fallout shelter, considering that he is very knowledgeable and useful in regards to providing enlightenment and guidance in the Jewish religion. Losing the rabbi will be a huge loss as the Jewish congregation relies on him for expounding and teaching the Jewish law.

The 12 year old girl who has a below average IQ, should also be among those being hidden in the fallout shelter. This is a young soul with an entire life ahead of her; furthermore, disability is not inability. Therefore, this kid should enjoy a chance to live a normal life just like other children. Learning for such children can be improved through means of peer tutoring, repetition and differentiated instruction among others.

A male high school student who needs a wheelchair to get his way around should also be among those being sheltered from the risks of the nuclear attack. This student’s life is already strained and difficult as it is. Sheltering the student will be doing him a favor, as he is not even privileged to take care of himself on his own.

A 19 year old college student’s life is also important to the country. It would be wrong to discriminate this student based on his sexual orientation, considering same sex marriages have been considered a civil marriage right. This young student’s life should be preserved and not condemned.

People Not Chosen

The 40 year old violinist is a suspected narcotics pusher and should not be let into the fall-out shelter. Reason being, this person is not observing the law and has greater chances of watching out for themselves. The 60 year old architect has lived most part of his life and chances are there are many graduate architects in need of a similar job position. The 26 year old lawyer is more likely to keep himself safe compared to his wife who just got discharged from a mental facility. The 34 year old retired prostitute has probably accomplished a lot in her life. This is evident as she is living on her annuities for five years, hence the younger lives should be prioritized before hers. The 20 year old gang member is a lawbreaker and is used to a life of violence, others genuinely need the protection more than this person. The 23 year old Catholic graduate student has a big heart and seems to care about the lives of others more. This person is not needy and would sacrifice his or her chance to be protected for the sake of those who direly need it. The 28-year-old male physicist who needs to carry his gun everywhere also should not be too privileged to be considered for the fall-out shelter. This individual does not sound peace loving, which means this opportunity would be more useful when given to others.

Greetings Saran,

We both shared some one the same individuals for chosen to be picked in the fallout shelter. I like how you chose what would be more ethical by picking individuals who need the most attention. I too chose the high school boy in the wheelchair and the 12 year old low IQ girl because it would just be immoral to not help them. I did not pick the 19 year old boy who came out of the closet because coming out of the closet could mean anything, the boy could be a serial killer. I did not pick the 70 year old rabbi because of how old he is. I chose a younger life to replace him instead. I agree with most of the people that you picked to not be chosen.

Hi Saran.

I appreciate your approach, it is nurturing and protective of those who cannot protect themselves. I'm interested in your view on the 23 year old graduate student, mainly by the assumption that she has a big heart and cares deeply about the lives of others. Is this assumption based on her open views of chastity? It seems this may be a stereotype based on her presumed religious views. I struggled with whether or not to select her. I did - but based the decision solely on her age and education, being young and educated. Thank you for sharing your views.

Saran,

I appreciated your perspective to the Fall Out Shelter assignment.  It opened my eyes to how differently I viewed this assignment and made judgments on who to choose and why.

Your choices are much more altruistic or faith based, you’re doing the right thing without thinking about what these people could do for you.  However, I think when I remove some stereotypes you may have made made much better choices than I did.  The 70 year old will certainly be wise in many matters and will have a positive social influence on the group. You have rationalized allowing the 12 year old girl by suggesting she deserves a chance at life due to her young age, however, I think she will affect the attitudes of the others in the fall out shelter.  They will feel responsible for her wellbeing along with their own.

I also appreciated that your view on the prostitute was positive, you stated that she achieved a lot in her life and her spot in the shelter should go so someone younger, not necessarily someone who was more pure or law abiding.
