Introduction
Jamaica had always believed in itself. It believed that it could work its way up through
thick and thin, just like any other third world country. In this country, vision is not enough.
Former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley learned this lesson the hard way. His political
ideals were not enough to feed, educate, and treat Jamaicans. He happened to be on the wrong
side of politics, and this cost him and his fellow Jamaicans all the same. Manley, just like any
other leader who is passionate about saving his people, had to make tough decisions. These
decisions were so severe that he was the enemy on both sides. His people believed that he was
the reason behind their suffering, and the United States saw him as a threat. These decisions
revolve around the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which had promised to offer a solution
to the nation’s problems.
Dramatic changes that transformed the social, political, and economic conditions in Jamaica
Manley was a leader who set his eyes forward. He had a plan for his people, and this
meant that they would not have to pay for secondary education, expand the bauxite industry,
increase support for low-income housing, offer better wages for workers, and boost the
friendship between Jamaica and Cuba. His moves were aimed at eliminating capitalism, which
