I am thinking that the problem you posted cuts off, and there are more choices you are given.  I think I found the origin of where this problem comes from and I believe that all of the choices go from A to L.  I went ahead and labeled the rest of these problems.

In this problem, we will need to determine which of our choices gives us exact numbers for results.   I would say that any choices that mention converting a known value of units to another unit means it would result in an exact number.  Other choices dealing with measuring and estimating the units of an object would not give us an exact number.

A)  Number of inches in a mile.

<1 mile is known and it is being converted to inches>

                                            EXACT NUMBER

B)  The diameter of a dime

<We don't know anything about the dime yet.  We are measuring and estimating>

                                          NOT AN EXACT NUMBER

C)  The mass of a 12oz bag of potato chips

I believe that the bag carries up to 12 oz, or ounces, but I don't think we know the mass of the contents inside exactly.  Basically, we are measuring the 12 oz bag and estimating what its units is.

                                       NOT AN EXACT NUMBER

D)  The number of ounces in a pound

<1 pound is known and it is being converted to ounces>

                                      EXACT NUMBER

E)  The number of micrometers in a kilometer

<1 kilometer is known and it is being converted to micrometers>

                                     EXACT NUMBER

F)  The number of inches in a  kilometer

<1 kilometer is known and it is being converted to inches>

                               EXACT NUMBER

G)  The mass of a Nerf ball

<We don't have enough information about the Nerf ball, so we are measuring and estimating>

                            NOT AN EXACT NUMBER

H)  The number of seconds in a year

<1 year is known and it is being converted to seconds>

                                  EXACT NUMBER

I)  The surface area of a penny

<We don't have enough information about the penny meaning we only rely on measuring and estimating>

                              NOT AN EXACT NUMBER

J)  The temperature of the surface of the sun

<We rely on measuring and estimating the sun's temperature.

                                 NOT AN EXACT NUMBER

K)  The number of mL in a cubic foot of water.

<1 cubic foot is known and we are converting to ml (milliliters)>

                                EXACT NUMBER

L)  The number of pages in this book

<This part is tricky.   You are counting the number of pages in the textbook that this entire problem comes from, and they provide the count of exactly how many pages are in your textbook.>

                              EXACT NUMBER

SOLUTION:  Choices   A, D, E, F, H, K, L
