Every day, foods are some of the most "mass produced" foods in the world sometimes to the
point of sometimes gross overproduction. One of the sticking points for such farming practices
is that "we have to feed the world," yet people still go hungry and we still overproduce foods. Is
there a more sustainable way to farm these foods? Please, choose one ingredient or farming
method.
Food production has tripled over the past half century and has allowed the world's
population to increase by 4.5 billion people. Humanity will need to feed several billion more
people by mid-century while minimizing the environmental burden of food production and coping
with the impacts of a changing climate. A nation cannot feed its population by depending solely
on imported foods. This is the very reason every government ensures food security as food
production is cheaper compared to making imports. The lack of fresh, local food production
significantly impacts our diet and health. We tend to eat what is available, highly
processed food that can handle long distance travel and has a long shelf life important.
