Introduction

South Korea or the Republic of Korea emanates from the kingdoms of the Korean
Peninsula that dates back to A.D. 668. During world war II Korean peninsula was still under Japan
colony with many Koreans being subjected to the war under japan command. Japan's defeat at the
end of the world of war II led to the division of the Korean peninsula into South Korea and North
Korea in 1948. In 1950, the two countries entered into conflicts that led to the Korean War, which
lasted for three years claiming more than 2 million lives (History.com Editors, 2018). The war was
influenced by the United States (that barked South Korea), China, and the Soviet Union that
supported North Korea. The war led to the alienation between South and North Korea and
continued enmity that took many years to resolve. In addition to history, this paper discusses the
geographical location, trade importance and the government of South Korea. Besides, the paper

South Korea is located on the southern Korean Peninsula and separated from the North by
a demilitarized zone (DMZ) also known as the 38th parallel. Today, South Korea has enhanced
international relations with neighboring countries that have enabled the country to engage in
international trade successfully. Trade relations with countries such as the U.S, China, Japan, and
other Asians and Western countries have led to the economic success of South Korea. The
population of South Korea has surpassed 51 million with almost half of the population (25 million
people) located in the capital city, Seoul.
