The Effects of Technology on Reading Performance in the Middle-School Grades: A
Meta-Analysis with recommendations for Policy and Practice.
Technology has been known to advance at a very fast rate especially towards the end
of the twentieth century when everything started to get more and more digitized. Today,
technology has found its way into the classrooms and the question is; how effective will it
be? So far, research has shown that technology in the classroom is as effective as the
conventional classroom. Results from this research show that technology especially when
learnt at a young age can have a positive impact on students at the middle age level. It was
determined that technology can help in comprehension and other ways of literacy acquisition.
However, not enough research has been conducted to focus on the effect that technology has
on dispositional, affective and metacognitive outcomes. There should also be a lot of
encouragement for more research on digital learning environments especially those focused
on students around this age so that their scope is broadened and so are the interventions and
the outcomes of their studies.
It is safe to conclude that with the progress of the technology and how the young
students are embracing it, we should be optimistic of better days to come since technology
has always been known to simplify life. It should also be noted that at this age the young
students are eager to learn and get the most out of their classrooms. Therefore, if they get
used to this type of technology, by the time they get to college level they will be more
