novel is considered to be defining piece of work that was produced during the postwar Beat and
counterculture generation. The protagonists in the novel, On the Road are living life that is against the
backdrop of drugs use, jazz music and poetry. On the Road by Kerouac has many themes that have huge
impacts to the readers.However,the most outstanding theme that is seen from the novel is,friendship.In
our day to day lives, friendship plats a very important role in the enhancing of one’s moods, emotions and
physical health. People who have no friends are often left in a state of vulnerability due to loneliness for
they cannot talk to anyone in case they have any problems. However, friendship can also suffer its own
share of problems of which the parties involved should find a way out of it.Friendship can also be very
destructive and from the novel, it is going to express of the importance of friendship and its setbacks in
our society.
From the entire paragraphs in the novel, On the Road, it has lists of names that belong to Sal. This is clear
indication that the theme is widely discussed throughout the novel. For Sal, he is a very good and natured
person and all his friends have different characteristics. Carlo Marx is a poet and he is the artistic type,
Old Bull Lee is widely eccentric. Sal has ordinary every day friends like Chad King.However, the most
important friend that Sal has and they spend most of their time throughout the novel is Dean Moriarty.It is
the bond that exists between these two friends that drive the plot of the entire novel. Dean has just come
from prison and he is a handsome, charismatic and exiting person. He serves as an inspiration to Sal and
Carlo and for Sal he believes that, Dean is “new kind of American saint” and a “holy Goof”. After Dean's
arrival in New York they are able to start their friendship with Sal.
