Discussion Points are awarded for comments that · reflect that you have read the required text and readings · that you have prepared the discussion questions in advance · that you have thought about the content · that you have attempted to understand the readings · and that you are able to apply the content to "real life." In other words, quality comments reflect effort, accuracy, and thoroughness. If you do not understand the material, you can still earn participation points by demonstrating that you have made an effort to understand the material and that you have read the text. Trying to struggle with and figure out the information merits points. I expect you to make posts that directly address all parts of the discussion questions as well as respond to others' postings. Points awarded for responses to others' postings will be awarded using the same criteria as original posts (see above, see syllabus).

You will not earn points for posts/replies that do not meet the above criteria or for posts/replies that simply reflect information from your personal life without incorporating specific concepts and understanding of the chapter.

Your reply should focus on enhancing your peer’s discussion and not on the organization or if you enjoyed reading it. This can be mentioned but should not be the focus. Further, you will not earn points by simply stating that you agree or disagree with a classmate without fully supporting your opinion with concepts from the course material. Your peer response must enhance your peer's post while incorporating concepts from the course material directly related to the discussion question.

Please review the discussion board guidelines.

Required: Three posts per chapter.

  • Post 1: Address the following: What was the most challenging part of the chapter for you to grasp?
  • Post 2 & 3: Select 2 topics from those below. Post 2 & 3 must be a minimum of 350 words combined. (approx 175 words each).

Required: Two responses to peers' posts per chapter. Peer responses must be a minimum of 125-150 words for each peer response.

  • One of your peer responses must address your peer's posts 2 or 3 which address the general chapter topics reviewed below (word minimum 125-150 words). See the discussion guidelines for additional instruction.
  • Your second peer response may either address your peer's posts 2 or 3, or you may elect to address your peer's Post 1 (what they found challenging), however please note that if you respond to Post 1 you are required to attempt to clarify misunderstandings or areas of confusions expressed by your peer (word minimum 125-150 words). See the discussion guidelines for additional instruction.

Inside your discussion always start by titling your post in bold using one of the topic titles below and then discuss your topic starting on the next line. You will then reply to two of your peers' posts from either the same or different topic. On the top line of your peer responses write "reply to:" and then the title of the peers' post to which you are responding. Start your peer response on the next line.

Chapter 3: The Biological Basis of Behavior reviews various aspects of the brain and nervous system as they relate to emotions, behavior, and other areas of functioning. For this discussion board you will be writing about the organization of the nervous system and neurotransmitters in the nervous system.

Post 1: What was the most challenging part of the chapter for you to grasp?

Post 2 & 3: Complete BOTH A and B discussion topics.

Discussion A) Organization of the Nervous System

You are about to give your first speech in front of your speech class and are nervous about getting up in front of everyone. As you anticipate getting up in front of the class, you begin to feel butterflies in your stomach and a pounding in your chest. Using this example, explain how the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system work together to help your body react to this situation.

Discussion B) Neurotransmitters in the nervous system

Describe the function of neurotransmitters in the nervous system and name and briefly discuss three neurotransmitters and how each of the three neurotransmitters that you have selected influences behavior.(refer to pages 71-74; ebook section 3-1 for overview and table 3.1)

Post 2: Complete discussion A

Post 3: Select from either B or C

Discussion A) Classical Conditioning

1. What is classical conditioning?

2. After watching the video below answer the following questions regarding the Little Albert study (the answers to the below questions must pertain to the Little Albert Study, not just "in general what these terms mean"):

  • What is the Unconditioned Stimulus in the video?
  • What is the Unconditioned Response in the video?
  • What is the Conditioned Stimulus in the video?
  • What is the Conditioned Response in the video?
  • Define both stimulus discrimination and stimulus generalization?
  • Does this example shown in the video demonstrate stimulus generalization or stimulus discrimination?
  • What would extinction look like if it were present in the video?
  • What would spontaneous recovery look like if it were present in the video?

Discussion B) What's Happening?

• What is operant conditioning? What is reinforcement and punishment? Now address the situation below:

• You’re a parent and every time you go to the store your child starts yelling and crying and you buy the child a toy.

• What’s going on? Would this be reinforcement (positive or negative) or punishment?

• How can you stop the yelling and crying behaviors? Would this be reinforcement (positive or negative) or punishment?

Discussion C) Schedules of Reinforcement

• What is operant conditioning? What is reinforcement and punishment? • What are schedules of reinforcement? Next, provide an example of fixed ratio versus variable ratio schedule of reinforcement. (Do Not simply restate an example from the PowerPoint or the textbook, etc.). Also, which has a higher resistance to extinction?

Explanation & Answer

here is question 1. Still working on the other ones

Question One:
Discussion Post One:
What was the most challenging part of the chapter for you to grasp?
The most challenging part of this chapter for me was the idea that mental health
and our reactions can be caused by biological responses. The nervous system is so complex
and controls many parts of our bodies both physically and emotionally. Neurotransmitters
was one topic that I struggled to grasp. I even looked it up, it has more to do with chemistry
then psychology. It surprises me how much psychology uses biological and chemical
science.
Discussion Post Two:
Our bodies react to protect ourselves from physical harm. There are particular
biological responses that occur because of emotions, specifically nervousness. In the
scenario, I am nervous about giving a speech in front of my classmates. Right when I am
about to give my speech, my body begins reacting through sympathetic and
parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic division of
the autonomic nervous system is the division that focuses the bodies reactions to physical
activity. It is better known as the division that uses fight or flight. It accelerates the body, in
this case because of my nervousness my body is trying to figure out if I should fly or fight.
This is why my heartbeat accelerates. This pounding in my chest is because of my
nervousness or fear. The other division, the parasympathetic division works with my body
to calm down the intense reactions. In other words, the moment I felt butterflies and the
numbing relief after presenting. If the scenario had my heart beating slower or my body

going colder then these reactions would be parasympathetic. This is the body’s natural way
of protecting itself.

Discussion Post Three:
There are over a dozen different type of neurotransmitters in the human body.
These neurotransmitters allow the neurons to send messages to both other neurons and
muscles. They are essential specifically to behavior and how it is influenced. In this
discussion post I will be discussing three neurotransmitters. The first one is dopamine. It is
one of the more well-known transmitters in the nervous system. Dopamine is a
neurotransmitter in the brain. The more dopamine within the brain, the more pleasure a
person may experience. Another neurotransmitter is the acetylcholine. It is primarily in the
brain and is used to send messages to other neurons. This particular neurotransmitter is
found in pain medication. It smooths and contracts muscles. This behavior is used during
moments where relaxation is necessary to survival. The third neurotransmitter is
serotonin. This particular neurotransmitter is able to regulate and control moods as well as
memory. There are various other behaviors that occur because of serotonin also including
appetite and sleep. These behaviors are important and when not regulated c...
