Many younger Americans are not familiar with the SS program. AARP does a lot to promote the SS program, but younger Americans do not belong to the AARP. The Federal Government has borrowed so much money from the SS program that it is on the verge of being bankrupt, and many Americans no longer trust that the funds will be available to them when they retire. Private industry has instituted alternative retirement programs such as 401(K) and funded health care packages. It is good to consider these alternative programs as they do not rely on the Federal Government for their funding nor their disbursement of funds.
