Chapter 9
Chapter 9 focuses on African History to 1500 CE. The authors argue that most
Western and European historians normally misrepresent Africa by, largely associating it with
extreme hardships and consisting of mainly tropical rainforests with wild animals roaming
out an about. Nevertheless, Berger et al. (2016) portray Africa as a continent rich with
unfathomable history, which historians still contend with nevertheless. In this section, the
most important pieces of information on Africa’s history will be explored, including early
civilizations, impacts of Christianity and Islam, and slave trade. Moreover, this discussion
will entail early communal migrations within Africa as well as the factors that led to the
move. Lastly, the development of Swahili traditions in the East Coast of Africa, and the
impacts of inter-cultural as well as inter-continental trade will be assessed.
In this light, the first important item involves the various environments found in
Africa and how they impact population growth in the continent. Berger et al. (2016, p339)
assert that Africa is the second largest continent in the world with diverse climatic and

unfertile, which can be attributed to the continent’s geologic age. Moreover, rainfall in most
parts of the continent is unpredictable and concentrated in merely in two or three months per
annum. As well, settlements and population growth in Africa is mainly influenced by lifethreatening diseases such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, and yellow fever. This information is
important as it describe the main challenges that have influenced the gradual development in
Africa.
Moreover, the second important piece of information presented in the chapter is the
fact that studying African history entails great difficulty because of lack or minimal written

physical evidence that have been left behind to show that Africa had innovative social
structures and well-established civilizations before 1500 CE. As well, it is inferred that
African societies preserved their history orally, which was passed down in time immemorial.
This mode of preservation was mainly ignored by past historians, who in turn perceived
Africa by developing stereotypic narratives that continue to plague Africans. This piece of
information is important as it shows that very little is known about African history mainly
because Africa’s history there is very little documentation to showcase its early history.
Hence, the methodological difficulties of learning early age and middle age history of Africa
do not warrant that Africans did not have civilizations.
The third important item discussed in the chapter involves the Aksum Kingdom and
Ethiopia. The authors explain that the kingdom comprised of present day Eritrea, Ethiopia,
and parts of North and South Sudan (p345). The kingdom featured varying climatic
conditions in different parts that enh...
