10 BIOGRAPHIES OF NON-EUROPEAN WOMEN HISTORICAL FIGURES LIVING UP TO 1500!!!

With the exception of India and China, most world history textbooks ignore and/or omit non-western civilizations and their leaders. In addition, these books often ignore the role played by women in these and in European civilizations and nations. To correct this problem, this course will require students to research and prepare bios on women historical figures impacting

civilizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Islands. Each bio must provide information covering the following areas:

Birth and death dates

Any data about personal/family life

Other positions, titles... held

Contributions to civilization/nation

Overall historical importance

Any challenges or tragedies s/he confronted

Outstanding accomplishments/achievements

Why this person should be better known

Students are required to conduct independent research to arrive at the 10 women historical figures. These figures must have lived and labored during the period covered in this course [to the Renaissance]. Start with the textbook and move from there. Each of the actual bios must be less than eight sentences. Students must complete these in their own words. Copying from electronic sources will result in an “F” on the assignment. So please use your own words and follow the guidelines listed below. The assignment must use complete sentences [meaning no fragments or listing of data]. Students must consult a minimum of three sources per leader. At least one source must be a book. Include the sources at the end of each bio.

Reminder: Your 10 Bios are due Thursday. Remember: No bio should be more than eight (8) sentences; all statements must be in your own words--no quoting or copying; the women must have been born before the Renaissance era (before or near 1500); the statements must be in paragraph form--no listing or numbering of information, and the historical figures must be women of color.

Historical Women Figures in Africa before 1500 CE
1. Cleopatra
In 70 or 69 BCE, Cleopatra VII was born as the second daughter of Ptolemy XII in
Egypt. She was not a native Egyptian, her family was of Macedonian Greek ancestry. At the
age of 18, Cleopatra ruled as a co-regent with her brother, 10 year old Ptolemy XIII. As well,
their tradition required her to marry her brother so as to protect ensure the throne did not go
to other families. Nevertheless, she was later overthrown by her brother’s guardians in 49
BCE. Cleopatra is known for her affairs with Julius Caesar, who later helped her regain her
rule in Egypt. Due to traditions in various civilizations at that time, she could not rule alone
as she was established as a co-regent of her brother, Ptolemy XIV. After the death of Caesar,
she had an affair with Mark Anthony. Cleopatra died in 30 BCE, and she is renowned for her
zeal to rule and her fight to be the only ruler (Berger et al. 2016).
2. Queen Hatshepsut
Hatshepsut was lived between 1508 – 1458 BCE. She was the daughter of an active
and inspiring king of Egypt, Thutmose I. She was married to her Eldest brother, Thutmose II,
who became king after the death of their father. Queen Hatshepsut ruled alongside His
husband/brother until his death, where she became the first female pharaoh in Egypt. After
the next Pharaoh, Thutmose III became of age; he ruled the kingdom alongside her (Galan,
Bryan & Dorman, 2014). Queen Hatshepsut is renowned for being the first female pharaoh in
Egypt at a time when women were not allowed to be sole rulers. She faced numerous
challenges that involved gender inequality that later led to becoming a co-regent of Thutmose
III (Diamond, 2020).
