1. Analysis of the root cause of the physician shortage
According to the health world organizations, there is a worldwide shortage of physicians.
The shortage is more prevalent in developing countries because of the limited capacity and number
of medical schools in such countries (Buchan & Aiken, 2008). The medical schools are the ones
that control the number of people who qualify to exercise medicine. The acceptance rate of medical
schools is significantly low. For instance the average acceptance at Harvard University is only 3.8
percent, while the ones in average medical schools is about 7 percent. In the United States, medical
students who have recently graduated undergo residency training lasting up to four years. The
residency funding originates from the state. Because of the high budget and inability to balance
them, the funds are only meant to accommodate 115,000. Therefore high residency funding as
also resulted to the shortages.
Why does it exist?
55 percent of registered nurses are over 50 years old and they are heading towards
retirement; such shift has caused shortages since there are no replacements (Buchan & Aiken,
2008). Moreover, the United States has a high number of older people. The elderly are experience
many complex conditions at their older age more intensely that they had at a younger age. Such
delicate conditions include high blood pressure, arthritis, cancer, pulmonary diseases, and diabetes.
There are limited numbers of physicians who can handle such diseases.
Is there a shortage or just a poorly constructed system for using physicians?
There are indeed shortages in physicians, and various reasons have been associated with
the rural to urban distribution, altered population demography, and emigrations. (Buchan & Aiken,
2008) The shortages are more predominant in urban areas and the developing nations where the

population is high. Therefore, the number of medical practitioners is significantly low compared
to the number of the population seeking medical support.
What are alternatives being implemented to remedy the shortage of available care to
patients?
