The word Hellenistic is coined from the root word Hellas, which was the ancient Greek
word for Greece. The Hellenistic period ranges from 323 BC to 30 BC which marks the death of
Alexander the Great, the spread of the Greek culture and power, and the Roman annexation of
Egypt.
Hellenistic Culture in Alexandria
As a result of Alexander’s policies, the meritorious Hellenistic culture was born which is
a blend of Egyptian, Persian and Indian culture. The Egyptian city Alexandria became the core
of Hellenistic civilization. Alexandria had many attractions which included Pharos, a lighthouse
which is over 350 feet tall. The palace of Alexandria had a collection of buildings which are for
religious and administrative purposes as well as some reception and garrison buildings. They
also had a luxurious dining pavilion with over 100 couches. Alexandria’s library contained over
500000 papyrus scrolls for research and reading. It also had the works of home, the play of
Athenian dramatists, the medical books from Hippocrates school. The museum included many
masterpieces of ancient literature and botanical gardens. Both the residents and the visitors
admired Alexandria’s immense beauty.
Science and Technology
Alexandria’s scholars preserved their teachings in the sciences. They excelled in many
fields such as astronomy, mathematics, physics, geography, science, etc....
