- You are a member of the hospital board and must decide which four out of the nine people will, through the use of a kidney dialysis machine, be able to live. The hospital can only obtain four machines—there are none available anywhere else—so five people must die.
- When you are finished first, explain using the lecture material on rationalization how you made your decision. In other words, what was your overall rationale for saving some of the patients by giving the machines while preventing others from living by denying them the machines? Second, provide an explanation for each person that you decided would receive a kidney dialysis machine and provide an explanation for each person that you decided would not receive a machine.

SOCY 2450 Macomb Community Ethnic Experiences Shape Social Gender Norms Questions
Chapter 10 presents information about different theories of socialization. It brings up how our social class, race, and gender influence how we raise our children. The chapter also covers different parenting styles and contexts, the benefits and the challenges to being an involved parent.
There are benefits and costs to being a parent. It is not something that should be taken lightly. This class gives us a chance to give serious consideration to many issues surrounding marriage and family, and to our own personal attitudes about all the relationships in our lives.
1) Can you identify specific ways that social class, race, ethnic background, or your gender influenced the way in which you were socialized? Which one of these statuses had the MOST impact? How do these statuses interact with each other?
2) What type of parenting did your parents use in your family? Were they permissive, strict, conservative, democratic, authoritarian or authoritative? This explains a lot on how we assume parenting should be done. Were both your parents involved in your upbringing? How did that play out in how you feel about having your own children? Which parent did you spend the most time with? What type of activities did you do with them?
