Company Overview: State what company you have chosen and provide a brief overview of the company, explaining what industry and lines of business it is in and other noteworthy information. Walmart is a global retail company that currently operates in 27 countries in the consumer
defensive sector in three segments: Walmart International, Walmart U.S., and Sam’s club. The
company has 11,300 physical outlets, as well as online stores under 58 banners. Walmart is a
price leader in the industry that offers a great range of goods and services under the pricing
philosophy EDLP (Everyday Low Prices). Low prices and brand reputation for not subjecting
prices to frequent change due to promotions are the key factors that provide a competitive edge
over other firms in the industry. The product range includes products related to entertainment,
hardlines, Apparel, and home/seasonal products. In addition, the firm also offers fuel and
financial services. The company’s worldwide operations are, not restricted to retail but, extends
to wholesale as well as ecommerce. At present, there are 2.2 million full time employees
working for Walmart. The company’s total revenue for the fiscal year ended 31st of January 2020
was approximately $524 million. C. Douglas McMillon is the present CEO of the company.
The founders of the business are Sam. M. Walton and James. M. Walton; they focused
completely on the operation of variety stores from since 1945, until the Walmart discount store
was opened in 1962 and incorporated in 1969. The commencement of Sam’s club and the first
super center took place in 1983 and 1988 respectively. The first international venture by
Walmart happened in 1991 by means of a joint venture in Mexico. The company has made
multiple acquisitions for the purpose of expansion with the most recent acquisition being jet.com
in the U.S. and strategic alliance with JD.com in China in 2016.

Competitor Overview
Walmart international faces competition from omni-channel retailers. Sam’s Club faces
competition from other membership-only warehouse clubs with Costco being the major
competitor, in addition to competition from discount retailers and wholesale grocers with a
market cap of 134.992B as of 6th July, 2020, revenue worth 152,703M in 2019, and 149,000 full
time employees. Amazon and Kroger are among the primary competitors as well with the
former’s market cap being $1.442T, and the latter’s $26.06B as of 6th July 2020. Amazon has
earned revenues worth $280,522M with 840,400 full time employees while Kroger’s revenue
amounted to $122,286M in 2019, with 500,000 full time employees working for the firm. In
terms of revenue, Walmart is the clear leader, with Amazon, Costco and Kroger being its major
competitors in that order.
