Niccolo Machiavelli developed the concepts of the theory of duplicitous interpersonal
style in which an individual employs duplicity or statecraft in general and cunningness in their
conduct (Berridge, 2001). On the other hand, the utilitarian theory implies that the rightness or
wrongness of an action is judged by the outcomes of an action.
In the first scenario, Ronson decides to employ Machiavellianism to try to intervene
against further interference of their apples by the teenagers. Ronson screams out that, his head
has been hit and that he is furiously bleeding when the teenagers throw a stone. This shows
cunningness and use of duplicity as Ronson behaves as if the stone has caused him a severe head
injury (Midgley, 1974). Moreover, the teenagers stop throwing the stones further, saving the
apples from the further destruction that will create happiness for him, and his family, thus
adheres to the utilitarian theory.
