Why are ambiguous business requirements the leading cause of system development
failures?
Ambiguity means the statement or resolution which is not explicitly defined. In other
words, it means uncertainty or doubtfulness. Ambiguous business requirements are the
leading cause of system development failure because of increased cost, delay, and chaos. The
same operation or task is performed repeatedly by multiple people resulting in increased cost
to the business.
The repetition of work results in a delay in providing the final output. Consider a
situation where five employees have to complete 5 different tasks in 5 hours. the work done
by the first employee is preceded by the next employee. The ambiguous business
requirements will result in a repetition of a task that is done by all the employees. This means
the task completion for the four employees will take one additional hour. This means a total
of 4 hours of delay in the employee hours (Hoffman, Frederick, & Schwartz, 2014).
Sometimes the business requirements comprise of technical structures which can only
be understood by the technical person. For instance, anything related to software
development will be understood by the software developer....
