Life as a minority in NYC
Introduction
Cases of discrimination in NYC have been common and usually go on unreported. Over
the last one month, the combination of freshly minted protestors and more experienced hands
led protestations in New York City, driving thousands of marchers over bridges and blocking
the highway to denounce the murder of George Floyd at the hands of the police — and
denouncing racism in America (Kimball, 2020). The New York City police and protesters
clashed in the aftermath of Floyd 's killing, rekindling outrage at Eric Garner 's death in 2014
by the NYPD. Confrontation often turned violent, with a confrontation between cops and
protesters being the order of the day (Ransom & Correal, 2020). Most of the friends that I
have engaged with in the past believe that systemic racism is the main problem in the United
States. What makes this moment significant is that much of the rest of the United States
seems to have woken up to this reality over these past weeks and months as well. This
proposal aims to give insights on how discrimination happens with a focus on
anthropological topics like race, ethnicity, and culture. To collect data for this proposal, I will
conduct interviews with the participants living in NYC. I will later analyze the responses they
provided on the discrimination they have experienced as a minority people living in NYC.
Topic
I chose this topic because of the current protests against racial injustice after the death of
George Floyd in police custody. This topic also connected to me because I come from a
minority group. I believe I can give a firs hand information on my experience living as a
minority. This topic will also help to collect vital information on the experiences of the
participants that I will interview. The subject will contribute to knowledge building, by
explicitly examining the structural and systemic forces at work in New York, to develop and
further remedies to the challenges of blocking mobility and increasing inequality. George

Floyd is not the first African American whose death has sparked riots in police custody
(Ransom & Correal, 2020). There have also been rallies and calls for change after the police
killed Tamir Rice, Michael Brown and Eric Garner. This time around, the reaction appears
different and more persistent and widespread. Demonstrations have taken place throughout
America-in all 50 states.

Interviews
This qualitative research process is designed to explore a series of hypothesis

reframes aimed at building public support for policies that will address racial disparities and
reforms on law enforcement. The goal of this project is, above all, to increase awareness of
race as a social construct and racial inequality as the product of systemic racism. The
participants will be able to give their views on the current situation after George Floyd I
police custody. One person I will interview is my friend who is from the Native American
culture. His name is Aiyana. Another person I will interview is Jane who is my neighbor and
comes from the African American culture. I am looking also at interviewing my two
neighbors, Eric and Ann who come from the white culture and Asian culture.
Interview schedule
I will organize my interview by asking my friends first to interview with her after
class. I will approach my neighbors for an appointment when they are ready. I am looking at
doing one interview that will last for 20-40 minutes for each participant. For this study,
unstructured interviews will apply as there is no set of questions. I will ask open-ended
questions based on the current protests after George Floyd died during arrest and try to allow
the interview to flow just like a regular conversation. I will change the questions to match the
unique experiences of the participants.

The cultural anthropology topics will majorly focus on the issue of racism which is the
main issue that led to protests after George Floyd died in police custody. This is one of the
problems that the U.S and other parts of the world are facing at the mome...
