Description

Your paper is an explication of the poem, not a simple summary of what the lines say.

First, Write two papers that clearly explain the meaning of the two selected poems. What is the theme or meaning of the poem, and how do you know? Then provide a thorough explication that illuminates how the evidence in the text supports that thesis.

You may choose any poem that we have read in this part of the course. However, you should not merely repeat a discussion we have already had during a class session. The intent of this assignment is to get you to think carefully and independently about a single poem, and to develop your own unique interpretation of that poem. Then, in your paper, you must convey that thinking and understanding to your reader.

Remember to create a clear thesis. Remember to explain yourself fully and to illustrate with examples from the poem which you carefully analyze. This is an explication only, so focus on the text itself rather than outside research.

Remember also that your purpose is not to summarize the poem, but to explicate, analyze, and explain.

Length: At least two pages per paper.

Format: MLA. You should include proper citation to our text at the end of the paper.

I, Too BY LAN GSTO N HUG HES I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,” Then. Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am America. The Road Not Taken Launch Audio in a New Window BY ROBER T FROS T Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.

The Road Not Taken
The Road Not Taken is a poem that conveys the message of the different life choices
we face. Themes are ideas that emerge from the treatment of the subject matter in literary
works. (“What Is Theme? Definition, Examples of Theme in Literature - Writing
Explained”). The central theme of the poem is that life is full of options that we have to
choose the best. The choices determine our destinies and the severity of the consequences.
Only time tells if our decisions were right or wrong, and one cannot choose to come back and
correct our choices since life does not give us that second chance.
In the first stanza, the poet is confronted by two roads that diverge. The road is a
metaphor and is compared to the choices that he faces in real life. In this case, the options are
two, and he can only choose one and therefore contemplates what the best choice is. The poet
is trying to look at the future possibilities, ‘and I looked as far as I could to where it bent in
the undergrowth’ to see if he can make a confident and right decision. The yellow wood
mentioned in the first line may be a symbolism ...
