Introduction
It is always challenging bringing up teenagers in the society where people have become
socially immoral. The children are growing faster, knowing a lot of stuff about life that they
should not know at their age. With the daily changing of roles and empowerment from the
society, the children especially teenagers are gaining courage and becoming irresponsibly
immoral; failing to heed their parent’s wise pieces of advice. Perhaps it is the ever-changing
technology or increased laws over-protecting children from being punished or it could be food
that has made the children to develop and grow very fast and become sexually active at very
tender age. While many young girls become sexually active at a very tender age, the
irresponsible sexual behavior at this age is more than an innate behavior; it is influenced by the
environment, culture and family relationships. Connie is a good example since she physically
engaged in sexual behaviors at a young age.
Joyce Carol Oates in her story, "Where are you going, Where have you been?" presents
Connie to the readers; a fifteen-year old girl who has many boyfriends than girlfriends. Most of
the girls she has as friends are referred to as a mere pretense by the author because she loves
men/boys than girls. She is using girls to cover up just to dilute her being seen by men all the
