Module 4 - Case Role of Health Professional Case Assignment All health and allied-health professions have a Code of Ethics that is designed to guide those within the field. For this assignment, if you work in an allied-health field, please locate your professional Code of Ethics. If not, please choose a Code of Ethics from the Optional Reading. 1. Provide an overview of the Code of Ethics that you have chosen. What are some of the major areas that are covered? Why are these important to the profession? 2. Are there areas that you think are missing and relevant to the profession? Explain why or why not. This should not be opinion but should be supported by reliable sources. For example, you can use another Code of Ethics that covers the area(s) that you feel are important to support your argument, or also use scholarly and professional articles. 3. Are any of the ethical principles discussed earlier in the course mentioned in the Code of Ethics? If none are mentioned specifically, are they alluded to in the Code? Give examples. 4. Why is it important for all health professionals to have a Code of Ethics? Assignment Expectations 1. Conduct additional research to gather sufficient information to support your writing. This should not be an opinion piece, but an analysis. 2. Avoid the use of first person in your paper. 3. Limit your response to a maximum of 3-5 pages. 4. Support your paper with peer-reviewed articles and reliable sources, and use at least 3 references. Discussion: Reflection on Course Concepts Your comments will be graded on how well they meet the Discussion Requirements posted under “Before You Begin.” A poem by T.S. Eliot (1943) says, “We had the experience but missed the meaning.” As your experience in this course comes to a close, I don’t want you to miss the meaning of the materials you have read, papers you have written, and discussions we have had throughout the session. They are more than a series of assignments and grades—the end result should be an improvement in your higher-order thinking and your ability to make connections between thoughts and ideas. You can achieve that through reflection, the art of taking charge of your own mind. Reflection is a mental process that challenges you to use critical thinking to examine the course information, analyze it carefully, make connections with previous knowledge and experience, and draw conclusions based on the resulting ideas. A well-cultivated critical thinker (Paul & Elder, 2008): • raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely; • gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards; • thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and • communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems. For this discussion, take some time to reflect upon two concepts that you learned in this course. What are the concepts? What insight or ideas did you gain from learning each of these concepts? Were there aspects of the concepts that you would challenge? What is the importance of these concepts to public health? How will you use this new wisdom in your current or future career? In order to earn maximum credit, the comment should be more than your opinion, and more than a quick “off the top of your head” response. Be sure to support your statements, cite sources properly, cite within the text of your comments, and list your reference(s). The response must be a minimum of 250 words. Britton, B. & Serrat (2013). In the current setting, drugs meant for medicinal usage have been abused. In essence,
pharmaceutical companies have largely contributed to this drug problem by coercing physicians
into giving prescriptions that have not been ascertained. Pharmacies have got an ethical duty and
responsibility to the people that they serve. First, they have a duty to uphold the covenantal
relationship that they have with their patients. Since pharmacists are normally trusted by many
members of society to deliver on their duties with regard, they ought to respect this “gift of trust”
that they receive. To ensure that they respect the gift, they ought to ensure that they help their
patients to receive medication that would be of optimal impact in dealing with their ailments or
conditions. Pharmacies ought to stay committed to sustaining the welfare of their patients, and
they need to ensure that they maintain the trust that they receive. Prescription of medicine should
not entirely be aimed at earning financial proceeds for the pharmacy, but primarily providing the
most optimal care for patients.
Next, pharmacies have a duty to promote the wellbeing of every patient that they deal
with. This is directed at ensuring that they are compassionate and caring in the way that they
handle patient prescriptions. They ought to exercise beneficence in their activities, and the good
of their patients has to come first. Rather than administering prescriptions directly, pharmacies
have to consider the patient’s concerns with compassion and rely on health science to ensure that
they only administer what best suits the patient (Zeind & McCloskey, 2006). They ought to treat
patients with utmost dignity, and they should at all times preserve the confidentiality of a patient.
Always, decisions about a patient’s health should also involve the patient, to ensure that the selfworth of the patient is preserved. Additionally, there should be honesty and integrity in
pharmacies. Discrimination, self-interest, or any other factors that may not be in the best interest

of a patient should be avoided at all costs, and pharmacies should be genuine while acting with
the conviction of conscience.
Pharmacies should exercise their duties with competence. This means that they should be
updated with contemporary practices in medicine, and staying up-to-date with latest
technological advancements in their field. Besides, pharmacies ought to respect the values, and
aptitudes of their colleagues and other professionals in the medical industry. They ought to
acknowledge the diversity in opinions and beliefs, and when necessary, a pharmacy should refer
a patient to a more advanced facility to ensure that the patient receives the best care possible.
Pharmacies should not only serve individual patient needs but should also the societal needs of
the community that they operate within. Finally, pharmacies should seek justice in exercising
their duties where necessary, more so in distribution of health resources. They need to ensure
equality and fairness in the distribution while keeping the needs of their patients in mind, and the
society at large.
In the assigned case, The Medicine Shoppe, a pharmacy in Texas, is involved in a legal
suit for alleged misconduct in their duties. The pharmacy is accused of filing prescriptions to
patients of a local physician who was under investigation for drug diversion. The pharmacy’s
certificate of registration is revoked in the process, and based on the Controlled Substances Act,
the corresponding responsibility of the pharmacy is put to question. As per the facts presented in
the case, the pharmacy is at fault. This is because, from the arguments in the case, it is evident
that there is a neglect of duty and responsibility from the pharmacy’s side. The pharmacy is
tasked with an obligation to work with its patients’ best interests, but that is not the case in this
scenario. Based on the code of ethics for pharmacies, practitioners should administer
prescriptions with an aim of promoting the good of their patients. In this case, the pharmacy acts

with some form of neglect, in that they do not follow up with the physician to ascertain the root
cause of the necessity for the prescriptions on the patients. Also, regardless of the fact that the
physician is under investigation for some activities that may be maleficent to the patients, the
pharmacy still goes ahead and administers their prescriptions.
A pharmacist’s actions can have far-reaching impacts on society, more so if the actions
are not in line with the set code of ethics for pharmacies. According to (Wilkerson et al., 2016)
the opioid crisis in the United States can primarily be attributed to pharmacies acting in their own
interests, without necessarily considering the potential impacts of their activities in their
consumers. If a pharmacist designates medicine just for financial gains, then, many negative
impacts are deemed to occur with the usage of the drugs on patients. The more pharmaceutical
companies are pushing to make sales of their drugs, they are pushing more pharm...
