Instructor: Dr. Kaushal Summer 2020 The University of Texas at Arlington Department of Civil Engineering CE/CM 5344 – Construction Methods – Field Operations CE 4332 – Construction Equipment, Methods & Management INSTRUCTIONS: All students are expected to contribute to the completion of this project. All work should be your own and references should be documented to validate your results. Full credit will be given for an extra neat report and for creativity in presenting your work. OBJECTIVES This is a group project with up to three (3) students per group. The objectives of this group project are to familiarize you with an actual construction project. All members of a group need to participate equally. This project also gives you an opportunity to recap the information you gained from class. Each group needs to work independently (the results are different and are based on methods you select and assumptions you make). You can use the textbook, lectures, CAT Performance Handbook, RSMeans Cost Data (you can find the book in NH library – can be borrowed for couple of hours), and equipment manufacturers’ websites, as well as industry sources to obtain missing information. Your report should include rationale and justifications as to the construction methodology selected by your team. Also, you must include all calculations, in a neat methodical outline demonstrating the iteration cycles performed by your team to optimize the equipment combination selected for use on the project. You may include supporting materials in the Appendix. Consider safety, sustainability, environmental and social factors. List any assumptions and their justifications. The main body of report should not exceed 12 Pages (1.5 spacing, 12 size Times New Roman with one in. margins), not considering cover page, tech memo and appendices. KICKOFF MEETING (The group leader should submit Minutes of the Kickoff Meeting on Canvas by Sunday, July 12, 11:59 PM CST). Before working on the project, you need to have a “kickoff or planning meeting” with your team members. During this kickoff meeting, the following items must be discussed and a report be prepared for submission during the first day of work: • • • • • • • • • Date and time of kickoff meeting Members present Selection of a group leader Group member responsibilities Sources of information Assumptions Presentation of results Any questions/issues Meeting times to work on the project as a team SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS The leader of each group will submit report and presentation on Canvas. Use Group No., Group Leader’s last name and CE 5344 or CM 5344 or CE 4332 on the name of your files that you will upload; such as: Group x - LastName - CE 5344. There will be no changes allowed for your project report and your presentation after they are submitted. Late submissions will not be accepted. • • For report, submit both Word and PDF formats. For presentation, submit both Power Point and PDF formats. Include name of each presenter at the lower right corner of each slide. Include slide number on each slide. CE/CM 5344 – CE 4332 – General Guidelines for the Term Project – Summer 2020 Page 1 of 2 • • Final Project Report (80 Points) and Power Point Presentation (20 Points) -- Due Date: Sunday, August 2nd, 2020 (11:59 PM CST) After 11:59 PM CST on Sunday, Aug 2nd, 2020, links on Canvas will not allow you to submit! PROJECT INFORMATION A metro or subway (underground train) station is located near a river. The soil conditions at site are classified as hard clay and limestone material however excavation in this site requires soil support system. Depth of watertable at this location on the average is at 35 ft from the surface. Dewatering is work of another contractor. The station will be constructed with dimensions of 350 ft x 100 ft with three levels. The depth of station from the surface is 15 ft and overall depth of station (for three floors) is 90 ft. You are responsible for the excavation, soil hauling, and backfilling of this project. You project can include one of the following topics: Topic A – Protecting excavation walls by sloping, benching, sheet piling, soldier piles and wood lagging, slurry wall and tie backs or a combination of those methods. Topic B – Removal of soil and stockpiling at the site Topic C – Hauling extra soil to a dump site 10 miles away. Assume 8 miles on paved road (asphalt) and 2 miles on well-maintained dirt road. The paved road has +2% slope towards the dump site. The dirt road has a -5% towards the dump site. The dump site is relatively flat. NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you show your methodology and sequence of operation by using graphs. GRADING Part A: Report [80 points] • • • • • • • • • Kickoff meeting report, due on Sunday, July 12, 11:59 PM CST [5 Points]. 3. Regarding Project status meetings members were wondering how often the steering
committee would be meeting. The chairperson briefly described the suggested project
schedule. This included the project steering committee meeting dates when the steering
committee would meet to review the project progress, resolve challenges that could arise,
and plan for forthcoming work. These meetings will be held as each month begins to
create monthly status reports. The chairperson also advised that the advisory committee

Tech Memo
In efforts to create efficiency in transportation in Istanbul, the Metropolitan Municipality of
Istanbul decided that a railway transportation system will be constructed in Kadikoy next to
Bosphorus River. The transportation division of the metropolitan municipality tendered the
construction of the subway to the I&M group after present the most suitable proposal. I&M
group projects that the project will take two and a half years or 30 months to be completed. The
subway station will be measuring 350ft in length and 100ft in width. It will go down 90ft from
the surface and will be divided into three levels.
Excavation will be done using the Tunnel Boring machine, which is a hydraulic machine most
suitable for ground conditions. The machine will excavate on its own using special equipment. It
will also push itself forward independently. Wagons will be used to remove the excavated
material from the tunnel. As such, a temporary rail line will put in place to facilitate the
movement of the wagons. The TBM machine will do the completion of cement solution
materials as well as apply cement segments to the montage area. The presence of a water layer
will not be a problem because the TBM machine has a protective shield in the form of a steel
tube that keeps water out.
The subway station is one of several other unde...
