On May 19, 2016, the New York Times published an article titled “Donald Trump and
Hillary Clinton Set for Clash on Gun Control”. ("Breaking News, World News & Multimedia",
2016) Gun control and the second amendment rights have seen a heated debate in the US
presidential race in the wake of tragic mass shootings that has left dozens injured and even more
injured and loved ones mourning.
The US has a two-party system mainly because of the winner-take-all system which has
seen parties aim to become as large as possible to amass political power. Consequently, the
minor political parties have been left out of major political positions contention. The two main
political parties in the US are the Democratic Party and the Republican party. This paper is going
to discuss aspects of how these two parties differ in their view on gun control and how they use
this aspect in their campaigns.
The democratic party supports the stand that right to own firearms should be subject to
reasonable regulation. The party in its view recognizes the importance of firearms to the
American tradition but it is of the view that as much as it is an important tradition it should be
subject to reasonable regul...
