Data collection methods in healthcare outline
The WHO defines data collection as the continuous, systematic collection and
arrangement of healthcare data for analysis, interpretation, and presentation of the data for the
underlying medical research or projects geared to design, implement and evaluate health
programs.
The extraction of data from electronic patient records is a secondary data collection
method because the data was collected from an already existing source. The approach applied in
the research entailed collecting administrative data from the organization's electronic patient
management program to determine the hospital length of stay and discharge destination, which
were critical measures for evaluating the efficiency of medical services being offered.
The approach was selected for the study because, first and foremost, it was readily
available. Many healthcare institutions today are using electronic health record-keeping systems
(EHR) to collect and store patient's information digitally.
Furthermore, it was a less expensive method when compared to other methods such as
carrying out surveys, filling questionnaires, and carrying out interviews.
In conclusion, the extraction of data from electronic patient management programs in the
organization was a perfect approach of collecting data on the efficiency of the hospital healthcare
services based on admission and discharge times because the data was easily available, less
costly to extract, and easy to analyze.
