How Variable Pay Programs help Motivate Employees
Variable pay programs have been in existence for many years. One of the main reasons
they have withstood the test of time revolves around their ability to keep employees motivated
and engaged (White, 2009). Variable pay programs are financial structures adopted by an
organization that allows it to select flexible employee payments. The compensation an
employee receives depends on their performance, which gets measured in accordance with preagreed parameters. This payment system revolves around the notion that people love money
and, as such, are willing to put more effort in exchange for higher wages. One of the ways this
payment system motivates employees is that it allows them to earn more money by improving
their performance levels without moving to a higher job scale (White, 2009). Traditionally,
employees seeking to make money had to get promoted first. However, with variable pay
programs, employees no longer have to change jobs or get themselves reclassified.
When compensation gets pegged on performance levels, employees tend to feel
