Introduction
The cost and engagement needed to manage and run drug courts has ultimately sparked
concerns among scholars and policy makers. Many individuals are concerned about the
effectiveness of drug courts in reducing crime rates in the country as well as guaranteeing reform
among the criminals being assisted to reform. Evaluating the cost-benefit analysis in this context
is important as it helps to reach solid decisions on whether drugs courts should be maintained as
part of the criminal justice system or abolished from the system. Based on the research findings,
drug courts are effective in reaching the set criminal goals and objectives and they should be

successful in reducing incidences of recidivism. Finigan, Carey, & Cox (2007) indicate that drug
courts have managed to reduce both the frequency as well as incidences of criminal recidivism.
Their study, which lasted over a 10-year period beginning from 1991 to 2001, revealed that drug
courts reduced recidivism by at least 30%. It was also established that the use of drug courts
greatly increased the time for possible reengagement in criminal activity of the offenders. It was
found that the average number of years for criminals to engage in crime after the petition hearing
