Pitfalls in Obtaining Quality Data
Research consultants and development organizations usually gather field-based data
for monitoring, evaluation and research. Eventually, this data is used for making evidencebased decisions for maximizing project results and optimizing interventions. The drawbacks
experienced in obtaining quality data include inadequate training, poorly formulated
questions, inadequate sampling, and failure to monitor data.
The field officers usually require adequate training, and even the experienced
enumerators need a briefing of the type of data to collect before going to the field. This is
because inadequate training makes the enumerators introduce biasness in interpreting the
field data. Furthermore, in situations where software applications are employed in gathering
data, the field officers should be comfortable in using the software. The software gathering
the data should also be easy and intuitive to use. Additionally, poorly formulated questions in
the questionnaire hinder obtaining meaningful answers. As part of ensuring a seamless data
gathering process and collecting high quality data, it is crucial to make sure the survey
questions are phrased as unambiguously and clearly as possible.
The inappropriate sampling of data is also a challenge in obtaining quality data
because it leads to an unsuitable generalization of the findings. One must have the
appropriate sample that indicates the population to generalize. Additionally, field officers
should use statistical power to obtain relevant findings (Rimando & Brace, 2015). The last
pitfall is the failure to monitor the data to eliminate under-performing and cheating
enumerators, structure issues in the questionnaires and last-minute typos, and critical missing
points. Moreover, an electronic method can monitor the data straightaway after collecting.
The monitoring process assists in correcting errors that were not corrected during the phases
of training and planning.
