Description

the two microbial diseases are bacterial vaginosis and syphilis

Format

Students are required to give a presentation about a set of microbial diseases (2). This should be a narrated power point or video recorded presentation, that should not be less than 8 minutes and no more than 10 minutes long. [ dont worry about recording i will record after]

The presentation assignment is worth 50 points.

Presentation slides should be prepared in bullet style. Do not include paragraphs, too many sentences, or too much text. Bullets are used as a guide on what to talk about.

Content

The following components are required to be addressed in the presentation, and should be 1 slide minimum per component, and per disease, and no more than 2 slides for each:
  1. Introduction and Etiology: What causes the disease and a brief description of the causative agent.
  2. Pathogenesis: Brief description of the pathogenicity AND description of the characteristic virulence factors of the pathogen (how does it cause disease).
  3. Disease description: Organs/system that are affected and on how they are affected, common signs and symptoms, stages and development of disease (incubation period, progression), prognosis, significant/common complications, what it is like to live with the disease, etc. These will vary and depend on the type of disease and causative agent.
  4. Transmission: Describe how disease spreads and how contagious it is.
  5. Treatments: Most common course of action. No need to go into specifics.
  6. Prevention: Common ways or methods to prevent transmission and infection, availability of vaccines, etc.

Graphic/Visuals

Images/diagrams/tables are required in your presentation. All visuals should pertain to the information on the slide in which they appear (clip art type pictures do not count– see rubric on Canvas for details). They must be explained and referred to, and relevant to the presentation and information given. Include the source or link of the image under it (in small font).

File Name

Save your file with the disease names and your last name before uploading. i.g., toxoplasma/histoplasma_Escudero.pptx

References/Sources

It is absolutely necessary to reference all sources that were used to create your presentation. THERE WILL BE NO CREDIT WITHOUT THIS. Include references as a complete separate page. Use an appropriate professional citation or reference format (i.e. MLA or APA).

Minimum of five current (10 years max) sources are required. The following MUST be used as sources:

  1. Class textbook (include page numbers)
  2. Reputable internet web site - .gov, .edu, .org. NO .coms – unless it is approved (consult your instructor), include The CDC website has relevant and complete information for diseases.
    • NO WIKIPEDIA!
    • Students can use a reputable news article or interview with a knowledgeable person (health care professional, person with the disease or condition).
    - I HAVE ACCESS TO THE E-BOOK/PDF SO IF YOU NEED ANYTHING FROM IT I CAN PROVIDE
  • NEED IT BY SUNDAY JULY 12

Explanation & Answer

Hei there,I am back with the final version of your work. I am attaching to this message your full request. As you can see, the paper strictly follows your request and I made sure that everything is included. The paper was also spellchecked and checked for any incoherent sentences. Nevertheless, the adequate number of words were met.In terms of plagiarism, I always write my own works to ensure that you receive the best quality paper. You will see that the work I provided meets these needs too.It is a pleasure to offer my support. Keep me posted if any edits are needed. Even so, please keep in mind that I am on the European time zone so I might require a few hours before I can come up with a clear answer due to time difference. If you need help with any other tasks don't hesitate to tell me and I will gladly help you.Stay safe and good luck with your classes.Good bye!PS: I also attached the transcript if you prefer to read it in word format. Various graphics were provided and as indicated by your professor I also included the link from where i retrieved it. More than that, I tried to keep the presentation in bullet format as much as possible as that was mentioned in your prost.

Bacterial Vaginosis and Syphilis
Microbiology Presentation
2019/2020

Etiology – Bacterial Vaginosis
▪ Bacterial Vaginosis is a non-inflammatory syndrome, associated with dysbiosis of the vaginal
biotope.
▪ Bacterial vaginosis occupies a certain place among the diseases that occur as a result of sexual
contact and, according to specialists, more than 20% of women of childbearing age suffer from it.
(Hay,2017)

Etiology – Syphilis
▪ Syphilis is a chronic systemic disease with sexual transmission, resulting from infection with Treponema pallidum, a bacterium
belonging to the class of spirochetes, with small size (having a length between 6 and 15 microns) and spiral shape, consisting of
about 6-14 turns.
▪ The human body is the sole host of the bacterium.
▪ Outside the human body, the bacterium cannot survive.
▪ The incubation period of the disease is about 21 days.

From a clinical point of view, the disease has three stages of evolution

-primary
- secondary
- tertiary stage.

Epidemiology – Syphilis
▪The risk of transmitting the infection from a person diagnosed with primary to
healthy syphilis during a single sexual intercourse is 30%.
▪The incidence of the disease is high among young people from modest
backgrounds and among homosexuals.
▪Syphilis is much more common among men than women, the rate of damage
between the sexes being 3 to 1 in favor of males.
▪About 50% of people whose partners have been diagnosed with syphilis are also

infected with Treponema pallidum. (Clement et al,2014)

https://www.cdc.gov/std/stats17/syphilis.html)

Transmission – Syphilis
▪The infection can be transmitted in the following ways:
-sexual contact (most frequently, in the proportion of 96-98%);
-by touching the skin lesions of a person with primary or secondary syphilis;
-transfusion of infected blood;
-transplantation of organs from an infected organism;
(Prevalence of the pathology around the world, Retrieved from:
https://www.nature.com/articles/nrdp201773)

-use of contaminated medical instruments during medical-surgical
maneuvers (O’Byrne, MacPherson,2019)

Pathogenesis – Bacterial Vaginosis
▪Bacterial vaginosis occurs as a result of a sudden imbalance of
the vaginal microflora and the replacement of the normal
vaginal microflora (in which lactobacteria predominate) with
anaerobic microorganisms such as it is the case of:
-Gardnerella vaginalis
- Mycoplasma hominis. (Bradshaw,Sobel,2016)
