Coding Systems PowerPoint
Course, Program, and Institutional Outcome(s) Assessed:
This assignment measures your ability to meet the follows outcome(s):
• Course outcome: Relate the purpose of disease and operation classification systems to medical
coding.
• Program outcome: Demonstrate knowledge and skills employers expect of new hires entering
the career field
• Program outcome: Abstract information from medical charts to assign the correct diagnosis
(ICD-10), procedure (CPT), and supply (HCPCS Level II) codes in a variety or medical situations
• Institutional outcome: Utilize appropriate current technology and resources to locate and
evaluate information needed to accomplish a goal, and then communicate findings in visual,

Relevant Background Information:
A professional coder must fully understand each of the coding classification systems utilized in the
United States and how these are used in conjunction in real life application. Coders use ICD, CPT, and
HCPCS coding systems concurrently while coding patient documentation. In addition to utilizing
knowledge of these coding sets as a professional coder, students will also need to understand the
classification systems to earn the AHIMA CCA certification.
Assessment Purpose:
To demonstrate an understanding of the coding systems and the relationships between each system and
utilization by healthcare organizations and providers.
Assessment Directions:
Imagine that you are a coding supervisor and are asked by the CFO of your hospital to create a
presentation for the hospital board of directors to better explain medical coding. The board is made up of
medical professionals and business executives, but none of them is an expert in medical coding.
Create a PowerPoint with optional voice-over recordings in each slide that explain the following:
• A definition of medical coding
• An over of each coding set (ICD, CPT, and HCPCS Level II)
• When each code set is utilized
• An explanation of the impact of improper coding
• A scenario example for each provider setting (physician office, hospital inpatient, and hospital
outpatient) with a diagnosis and procedure, including the correct associated codes
Follow the steps below to complete this assignment:
1. Read the following article, https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-LearningNetwork-MLN/MLNProducts/Downloads/ICD9-10CM-ICD10PCS-CPT-HCPCS-Code-SetsEducational-Tool-ICN900943.pdf, which provides an overview of each coding system. To access
this article, hold down the CTRL key and click on the link, or copy and paste the link in your web
browser.
2. Consider what you’ve learned in this article, other readings you’ve been assigned, and
information explained in your coding classes, and create a PowerPoint that explains the coding
systems used in the United States. Your PowerPoint must achieve the following:
a. include written information and/or images on the slides,
b. include optional voice-over recordings on each slide, in which you explain the
information in the slide,
c. fully explain the five bullet points above, and
d. is a minimum of seven slides in length.
3. Write a draft of a script to accompany your PowerPoint slides. Submit this draft script to your
instructor by the designated due date. Using this script to create a voice-over is optional.
4. Once you receive feedback from your instructor on your draft script, apply that feedback and
create your PowerPoint slides. Then complete your optional voice-over recordings. Submit a
final version of the PowerPoint, including completed slides and optional voice-over, by the
designated due date.
5. To ensure that your PowerPoint is based on fact and not just your opinion or perspective, you
must use information from the article to complete it.
6. Each time you refer to information you gained from the article, make sure you indicate the source
for the information. It is important to avoid plagiarism by giving credit to another author’s ideas.
You should include the source in your PowerPoint slides. It is also a good idea to include the
sources in your script so you know when to reference them when you begin building the
PowerPoint slides.
7. Refer to the rubric at the end of this document. Check your work against the rubric to make sure
you have done everything you’ve been asked to do.
8. Refer to the following resources if you need assistance with PowerPoint:
a. PowerPoint Introduction video located in After Instruction,
b. PowerPoint Themes and Presenting in PowerPoint video located in After Instruction,
