Chapter 5 discussion questions
Question 1
The artificial neural network (ANN) is a tool utilized in machine learning inspired by
the brain's biological neural network function to process information. It is used for computing
information (Sharda, Delen & Turban, 2020). ANN receives inputs and delivers outputs
through the interconnected elements in the model. ANN is vital as a problem-solving
paradigm hence applied in many places. For instance, machine translation, character
recognition, which financial institutions utilize for fraud detection, forecasting in business,
and anomaly detection.
Question 2
Artificial and biological neural networks are different in structure and function. The
sizes are comparable; hence the capacity of processing is different. The biological neural
network has many neurons, and the computational capability to extract data is way
sophisticated than what the neurons in ANN can do. Besides, the firing frequency and mode
are different. In artificial networks, the information is carried in a continuous point; hence
there is no refractory period like in biological network action potential process. Thus, the
neurons do not get fatigued, and information will continue processing depending on the
computer architecture. Artificial neurons cannot self-regenerate after wearing out; hence, they
are inefficient in terms of fault tolerance. Also, energy consumption is higher for the artificial
neural network. The similarities between the two networks involving the processing of
signals through neurons. They receive a signal, transmit it to give an output through firing
along the neurons (Sharda, Delen & Turban, 2020).
Question 3
Single-layered, multi-layered, either feed-forward or recurrent networks, are the most
common neural architectures. The multilayer perceptron is the popular ANN architecture

utilized in machine learning (Lei, 2017). It is feed-forward and uses the back-propagation
algorithm. It is made of a unit of layers in an organized outline whereby each is connected to
the next layer. The multi-layered perceptron is used in supervised learning due to its ability to
carry out nonlinear mappings. It solves propagation errors in the network hence vital ...
