Final Essay Stage Two ah W 334: ARTH Outline and Annotated Bibliography June 27, 201 1 Outline & Annotated Bibliography The option I chose for the final project was option (b), to select and write about a feature length film made between 1970-2000. The film I chose is a story by Stephen King, ‘The Green Mile’, directed by Frank Darabont. Below I will outline my final paper for the course, as well as list and discuss a few sources that I will be citing. • Introduction • Discuss the making of the film • The film’s success (box office/awards and nominations) • Critical reaction to the film • Personal reaction to the film (what I liked/did not like, critique of main character roles and actors/actresses who played them) • Discuss direction of film (montage/sound and music) • Discuss direction of film cont. (cinematography/ special effects) • Conclusion • Bibliography Cinematography of The Green Mile. (2014). Cinematography of The Green Mile. Retrieved 27 June 2017, from https://bnyce82.wordpress.com/ This reference is specific to the cinematography techniques used in the film, ‘The Green Mile’. It provides insight into the various aspects of cinematography, such as the tone of the film, the camera angles and lighting, as well as the dialogue between the characters. This reference will help backup the information I will provide in my final paper. 2 Darabont, F. (1999). The Green Mile. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VslrToVsu80 This reference is the actual film, ‘The Green Mile’, found on YouTube. I will be watching the entire film to gather information for my final paper. The information I will be looking for while watching this film are the editing techniques used by the director, as well as my personal reaction to draw a general conclusion from. Ebert, R. (1999). The Green Mile Movie Review & Film Summary (1999) | Roger Ebert. Rogerebert.com. Retrieved 27 June 2017, from http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/thegreen-mile-1999 The movie review of, ‘The Green Mile’, by the late Roger Ebert is a perfect reference to gain insight to the critical review of the film upon its release. Kuhn, A., & Westwell, G.(2012). cinematography. In A Dictionary of Film Studies. : Oxford University Press. This general reference on cinematography is from the Oxford Dictionary of Film Studies. I found this entry very useful during week 4 of the course when it was presented and will use it as a reference for my final paper, as well as future discussions. The entry defines cinematography in film making as capturing movement on film, as well as explains the role of a cinematographer on a movie set. 3 Outline and Resources - You are to turn in an outline and resource list for your project before the end of week 5 and submit it to the proper folder. Shippen 1 Understanding Film Malina Shippen Frances Coley 7 July, 2020 Alien: The Science Fiction Movie that Changed the Game For my research paper I would like to take a look into the 1979 film Alien. I chose to use this film because of its cult following and subsequent sequels. For this topic I will use option B, which will allow me to view unknown information about the making of the movie, its success, awards, and characters. How the movie affected the genre if any, and what innovations this movie may have founded for the movie industry. Where did the inspiration for this movie draw from and how different elements affected the outcome of the movie. I will provide box office stats and award nominations, look at the film's design process, and detail some innovations (if any) provided by the film/ Director/ Cast. My justification for picking this topic stems from my interest in the movie itself and the desire to learn more. The Alien movie spawned a series of films which I believed surpassed the creator's expectations. I myself was born in 1983 and this movie impacted me well after its creation. I became aware of the movie after its creation and have sense been a fan. I have watched numerous documentaries and all the sequels up till today. I plan to look into how this film affected audiences during that time. For the research paper, I plan to look into the creation of the movie and the history of the director. I will use the famous IMBD and Rotten Tomato to pull the necessary information Shippen 2 during that time. I will use reputable archived news sources, documentaries, to provide insight into my topic. I plan to show areas were the film brought new ideas, film techniques, or others to the genre of films in general. The horror movie Alien, which was written by Dan O'Bannon and directed by Ridley Scott in 1979, was a masterpiece that inspired a lot of current movies. Since the horror film's first release, every frame has been the subject of research to find more meaning behind the creation. Despite having many sequels and imitators, the original film is still considered by many as the benchmark for creating gripping sci-fi films. Since its first release, Alien has been the subject of numerous debates among film critics and enthusiasts. Part of these debates was fueled by the fact that despite having countless imitators, the original movie is still considered by many to be a masterclass. Its design still looks as good as the sci-fi films that came after it, even though they were released several years after (Cumming). The most surprising part is that the movie depends so little on technology, also though it is a sci-fi. Compared to recent sci-fi films, Alien was created with no CGI but still gave the same awe factor as current titles. There are weapons and spaceships and androids, but these are not the film's primary focus, it is the alien inside you. The film's director, Ridley Scott, is considered by many critics as the best eye in the sci-fi business. He has been involved in some of the most inventive commercials in European television during the 1970s, with his landmark film Alien setting him apart as both a visionary and a talented director in the sci-fi and horror universe (Rotten Tomatoes). According to film critics, the film itself was received with nerve-straining and intense shock by the audiences who, for the first time, were being treated to a combination of space fiction and horror story. Shippen 3 The film Alien brought new ideas and techniques to the world of cinema. For example, the film is not highly dependent on computer-generated imagery, and this gives the aliens a basic yet realistic appearance in the movie. Ridley Scott's movie Alien helped reshape the sci-fi genre. Directors are often cautious of how their film looks and how it evokes emotional responses from the viewers. Scott exploits this aspect to its fullest potential by giving the spaceship an enclosed feel. I choose the title of the paper but may consider changing it later as my research progresses and I have gained more information on the topic. I have thought of titling the paper: “The beginning of Alien”. This title might work a little better depending on my findings. Shippen 4 Works Cited "Alien - Imdb".
