counseling suffering people depends on what their suffering is about, there are different types of suffering mainly poverty or illnesses that cannot be cured among others. The first step is to put yourself in their situation to understand what they are going through...secondly research about this type of suffering,(eg poverty) the causes of poverty at that specific location and ways in which it can be improved
The best way to help a suffering person is to provide a solution to their problem...this can only be achieved through interacting with the people in question and their environment.
Blending in with them will make your counseling more effective. This is a form of creating a comfortable environment...a good example is talking like them or dressing like them.
The solutions to their problems should be achievable and durable like teaching them a way of dealing with their suffering( example: poverty...teaching them how to make baskets or anything that requires low capital to begin)
The point of counseling is to help the suffering people otherwise there is no point of the counseling if it is not to remove the suffering. the people being counseled need help or a way to improve their state badly therefore they will hardly pay attention to anything other than specifically that from a counselor, that is how an organism functions on stress...they only respond to changes that are positively directed to their discomfort
