SOLVING TWO QUESTIONS

Question 1
Having a multicultural team has its share of advantages and disadvantages. Most
multinational companies always try to have as much cultural diversity as they can as this not
only improves the reputation of the company but also makes it possible to assemble a group
of experts from different backgrounds skilled in various areas. However, managing such a
team is not always easy and might turn out to be disastrous if not well managed. Multicultural
teams pose a challenge to manage as they present a potential of misunderstanding and
miscommunication. The management has to come up with techniques for handling the
diversity at their workplace and ensuring that all the employees work in harmony where
everybody feels appreciated.
One multinational company that seems to have succeeded in managing multicultural
teams is Apple. Although based in the United States, Apple has customers from all over the
world and it only makes sense that the firm has to embrace cultural diversity if they want to
effectively serve all their customers and stay competitive in the market. The company’s CEO
Tim Cook has been on the forefront advocating for diversity and has publicly made it clear
that the key to the future of Apple lies in diversity (Williams, 2017).
In recent years, Apple has revamped its hiring policies and their human resource
management department. Previously, the firm has been criticized for being too focused on the
product while paying little attention to the affairs of the workers; but that seems to have
changed. The company now prides itself in having a very diverse workforce and with well
laid out strategies of managing the multicultural teams.
To achieve this, the company has embraced various techniques such as deployment of
cultural programs, team work compensation, putting up various employee engagement
initiatives to promote team work collaboration, recognition and celebrating various cultures,
and cross functional integration appraisals (Pratap, 2019).

Over the years, one of the major driving forces for their success has been in their
hiring policy. Apple is known to be focused on hiring the top notch in the field. From the
time of Steve Jobs up to now under Tim Cook, the company has maintained that culture and
has set up programs that reward excellence among the employees. However, in recent years,
the company seems to have slightly changed the focus to not only hire the best but also team
work players, people from minority communities and more female in the management
positions.
A report released by the company showed that in 2017, 32% of all the employees at
Apple were women, which was a 2% increase from 2014. Also, there was an increase of
employees from minority communities from 19% to 23% ("Inclusion & Diversity", 2020).
This shows that the company is determined to have a diverse workforce and reduce the
challenges associated with having very few people from minority communities such as
stigma. The more the diverse the workforce is, the more likely it will be easy for the
employees to reduce stigma associated with particular communities and races.
Tim Cook has been on the front line in the fight against racism. Other than setting up
internal policies in the firm to deal with racism, he has also come out publicly adding voice to
the fight and declaring the company’s commitment to the cause. Apple also launched a $100
million initiative to fight racism dubbed Racial Equity and Justice Initiative which is aimed at
helping in the fight against systemic racial injustices and vowed to continue hiring more
people from the minority communities (Kastrenakes, 2020). Such actions send a great
message across the organization and motivate the employees to embrace each other’s
differences and work together without prejudices.
Apple also has special programs that are aimed at tackling challenged associated with
having multicultural teams. For example, the company offers onboard training for all the new
employees where the new workers are introduced to ...
