Description

(ALL IN THE UNITED STATES PLEASE)

  1. Facility design changes as rapidly as the health care industry. Facility design is heavily affected by current and future health care trends. Two additional drivers in facility design have been the evolution of medicine and the technology within the medical environment. This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to see the impact of historical and current trends within facility design.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper regarding two historical trends that have had an impact on facility design. Your paper should:
    • Identify two trends that have affected facility design.
    • Describe how each of the two trends looked 50 years ago.
    • Describe how each of the two trends have evolved into their current state.
    • Explain the reasons each of the two trends have changed.
    • Describe any future trends we might expect to see in facility design.
    • Also include Ambulatory Surgical Centers:The course will focus on ambulatory surgical centers.
    • Describe the current trend of ambulatory surgical centers.
    • Cite at least 5 reputable references used to complete your assignment. One reference must be from the journal/magazine listed in the weekly resources (i.e., Modern Healthcare, Healthcare Design). Reputable references include trade or industry publications, government or agency websites, scholarly works, or other sources of similar quality.

Historical Trends affecting Facility Design

The quality of healthcare depends on several factors, such as facility design. Facility
design in healthcare refers to the built environment and fixed components that healthcare
professionals directly or indirectly use as part of the treatment process. Facility design
experiences dynamics due to the impacting trends that account for major components in a
healthcare setting. The two main historical trends discussed that affect facility design in the
healthcare systems are historical innovations and architectural experiences.
Effects on Facility Design
Innovation is the main trend that affects all the aspects of facility design, especially in
ambulatory surgical care. Some of the common forms of technology affecting facility design are
types of beds, medicine admission devices, and surgical tools. The use of internet connections
and electronically controlled devices have converted most traditional hospitals to ambulatory
surgical care units. Architectural experiences affect the built environment in a healthcare facility
by focusing on aspects such as lighting, distractions, and space designs. The physical design and
position of most ambulatory surgical care units constantly change due to changes in architectural
designs.
State in 50 Years Ago
Most medical facilities in the United States lack several forms of technology 50 years
ago. The ambulatory surgical care was inexistent as patients were admitted for all types of
surgeries ranging from minor to major. Statistical records indicate a high mortality rate from
organ diseases and infectious diseases in the 1960s. For instance, in 1965, the United States of
America recorded 559 deaths per 100 000 people, while in 2014, the number was at 192. The

data shows that medical technology was three times below the current state. The surgical
machines and medical devices used in the US around 50 years ago were inconvenient, as evident
by the lung replacement. Most surgical tools required to carry out organ transplants were
unavailable, resulting in high death rates (Rosero et al, 2017). The architectural design of most
hospitals was advanced due to limited experience. Most architects had minimal knowledge of the
incorporation of medical aspects when designing a hospital. The architectural designs in the
United States increased the spread o infectious diseases as indicated by the high death rate. The
CDC data indicate that in the 1970s, most respiratory diseases caused deaths due to high spread
during treatment. The architects barely considered room spaces and ventilation in the healthcare
units. The overall effect of low technology and sub-standardize architectural experiences were
low life expectancies of 68 years in the United States.
