Dimensions of Cultural Diversity
Cultural diversity is the difference between a group of people on the basis of language,
ethnicity, traditions, values, norms, sex, and beliefs among others. Cultural diversity consists of
two dimensions namely; primary dimensions and secondary dimensions. Primary dimensions,
which are the dimensions most people are familiar with, are ethnicity, race, sexual orientation,
age, religious beliefs, education, and lifestyle. The dimensions of race, ethnicity, and age are
primary identifiers that are used to categorize people into major groups (Andresen, 2007). For
instance, governments use these identifiers for population distribution when conducting the
census of a nation. When considering workplace diversity, the primary dimensions of education,
age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, and nationality will be used as identifiers and
categorization of people. The secondary dimensions of cultural diversity are less related to an
individual’s social identity. The functional units of the organization are prevailing factors when
considering this dimension. Information about family status, work experience, academic
qualification, work styles, first language, and income status are considered when defining the
social dimensions of cultural diversity. It is important to note that when a certain individual
manages more than one functional unit, it should be considered as mixture of organizational unit
rather a mixture of people.
