Description

After a bitter debate over how best to use American troops in World War I, it was determined that they would serve under General John J. Pershing, but accept the final strategic authority from the Allied Supreme Commander, Marshall Ferdinand Foch of France. Initially, American troops were used piecemeal to plug up holes and to drive Germans back, when possible. By 1918, American troops were fully engaged. They secured their first victory in May, at Cantigny, just north of Paris. They suffered terrible losses in June at Belleau Wood, but still claimed victory.

The real turning point came at the second Battle of the Marne, in July, where the combined efforts of the French, British, Italians, and Americans counteracted the German offensive and drove the Germans eastward. Notably, Americans soldiers, fresh to the war effort and not weighed down by years of fighting, provided a decisive edge. In the fall of 1918, Pershing lost over 100,000 men as he and the other Allied leaders continued to push the Germans back. By October 1918, Americans were behind German lines cutting supply lines, and in November 1918, Germany surrendered.

Battle of the Marne

The second battle of the Marne marked the turning point in the tide of World War 1.
The beginning was marked by the last German offensive and was followed by the first allied
offensive victory of 1918. A French commander commanded the American force, and they
played the key roles both in the initial defence and later advances towards ensuring they beat
the Germans. By this time the American soldiers were already suffering casualties on a great
scale and had to find a way to ensure their men were well taken care of.
During the first phase of the battle that was fought at the banks of river Marne, the
American soldiers had to make an important strategic stand on the left of the river when the
German armies attacked early in the morning. Four American divisions had to lead a rapid
advance together with the French when the German command decided to reinforce the salient
so as to ensure that they avoided a rout. More divisions of the American soldiers were
committed to the course when the German soldiers started making air strikes and a lot of
defence was needed to ensure safety of the troops (Bunyan, 2009).
During the third phase of the war, the American 32 nd division captured the town of
Juvigny making sure that they cut down on the Germans and made them withdraw even
