Cultural Practices Discussion
The practices and customs surrounding death can vary depending upon culture, religion, and sometimes geographical location. For example, one family may choose immediate burial, while other cultures traditions include practices such as visitations and prayer services that can last for a number of days. There are also practices such as burial at sea, cremation, and scattering of the ashes in a variety of locations for sentimental reasons.
For this discussion, discuss the practices that surround death and dying as they relate to cultures and/or traditions that you practice, or that are of interest to you. Describe the practices, and what drives them.

Sue tomorrow. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2008/07/is-google-making-us-stupid/306868/Engaging with the Text – “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr1) According to Nicholas Carr, what has been the effect of the Internet on the way we read, think, and live? What EVIDENCE does he offer to support his claims? How does his discussion of the changes wrought by other technologies help him make his argument?2) Sergey Brin has noted, “Some say Google is God. Others say Google is Satan. But if they think Google is too powerful, remember that with search engines, unlike other companies, all it takes is a single click to go to another search engine.” How does Carr’s essay support or challenge this assertion? Why do you think this topic elicits such strong responses?3) Where in his argument does Carr INCORPORATE OTHER VIEWPOINTS? How successfully does he deal with them?4) Why does Carr BEGIN and END by referring to HAL from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey? How do the quotes he chooses from the film help him appeal to his AUDIENCE?5) What is your view of how technology is affecting the way we think, read, write and live? In a paragraph, discuss whether or not you support or challenge Carr’s conclusion that “as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence.” Consider mixing in some REFLECTION on your own use of computers to help make your argument.
