The 2000 Presidential Elections
The United States Presidential elections of 2000 were held on November 7 and would
end up being one of the most controversial, fiercest, and closest contests in the history of
American elections. The contest was between the Democratic candidate, Al Gore, who was the
vice president at that time, and the Republican George W. Bush, son to former President George
H.W Bush, and who at the time was the Governor of Texas. The election was marred by
numerous irregularities and conspiracies, from media peccadilloes, disenfranchisement of voters,
faulty voting equipment, and a faulty electoral system that saw President George W Bush pick
the win over Al Gore. Bush narrowly won the elections with 271 Electoral College votes to
Gore’s 266. A dispute arose as to who won the 25 electoral votes from Florida, and upon a
recount, it was claimed that the loser got more votes than the winner. The dispute would find its
way up to the Supreme Court, which on December 12, 2000, ended the recount of the votes and
declared Bush as the winner.
During the period of the election, Jeb Bush, who is President George W. Bush’s brother
was the Governor of the State of Florida where the 25 disputed votes came from. He was accused
of colluding with the president through his secretary of State, Kathryn Harris, who implemented
the felon purge of the State’s voter registration list by using a firm known as ChoicePoint.
