Indeed, the normalization of human experiences and feelings is an effective strategy in
the implementation of the use of self when dealing with clients in the social work setting
(Ganzer, 2007). It is easier for a patient to feel comfortable engaging with a social worker if they
understand the social worker’s view and position on the issue at hand. If the patient’s experience
is understood by the social worker and acknowledged to be part and parcel of human life through
the use of self by the social worker, the patient’s confidence in the therapy and therapeutic
process is increased which is a significant contributor to better outcomes. In the use of self, it is
important to remain professional and avoid countertransference as you have articulated because
this interferes with rational and objective judgement of the patient’s situation which could
negatively impact the expected outcomes.
